Pride and Ego Let the Devils In

“The Pride of Nature indeed inclines one man more strongly than another, but it forces none that they must be proud; and if there be a force [or strong compulsion upon any,] then it is when man willingly for temporary honor and pleasure sale lets the Devil into his eternal essences; and then the Devil sees presently how that man is inclined by the Spirit of the World, and in that way tempts him accordingly. If man lets him but in, he is then a guest very hard to be driven out again; yet it is possible, if the man entirely and sincerely purposes to turn, and to live according to the Will of God.” ~Jacob Boehme

Pride of Nature

What Boehme is calling “the Pride of Nature” is not natural pride, or being proud of the accomplishments of Mother Nature. He is talking about ego. Specifically, a puffed-up ego caught up is materialistic desires. A person to whom the word “treasure” means a pile of temporary money rather than the eternal treasure of an immortal spirit and soul.

Need for Ego

Ego is necessary. If it wasn’t, we wouldn’t have one. But any tool can be harmful when misused and ego is probably the most misused tool we humans have to work with.

Without ego, we have no drive, no passion, no desire to accomplish. This may stop you from doing evil deeds, but it also stops you from doing good ones. You become like a piece of driftwood floating on the tides. Some governments promote the destruction of ego since it makes their people into sheeple—people who behave like sheep or contented cows.

God has little use for those people. He needs people who can accomplish things for the good of humanity and the universe. He needs people who want to help and be co-creators. Sheeple can’t do that. The key is to let the spiritual faculties control the ego, not destroy it. First, of course, those spiritual faculties have to be awakened. Continue reading “Pride and Ego Let the Devils In”

Harmony with Divine Will for Continued Spiritual Growth

“That power of making ‘swift and loving ascents’ to the plane of onwise to which man attained t the end of the Interior Life, that conscious harmony with the Divine Will which then became the controlling factor of his active career, cannot be the end of the process of transcendence. The soul now hungers for a more intense Reality, a closer contact with ‘Him who is measureless; a deeper and deeper penetration into the burning heart of the universe. … Beyond both the conditioned and unconditioned world, beyond the Trinity itself that love discerns its ultimate objective—the very Godhead, the Divine Unity.” ~Evelyn Underhill

Plane of Onwise

I don’t know what “onwise” meant to ancient mystics. The only references I find online are to a modern corporation using that name. I believe that it means those who have raised their frequencies high enough to be in regular contact with the fifth dimension. That is the lowest of the nine dimensions considered to be part of the spiritual realms. It is the place where angels and Being of Light dwell. This is usually the highest level spiritual people become a part of while still living in the third dimension of matter. Quoting and interpreting from the writings of John of Ruysbroeck, Underhill says that this cannot be the end of our spiritual life, or the end of our spiritual growth. She is correct. If the fifth dimension were the highest level we could ever reach, it would be pointless to even bother. Fortunately, it isn’t.

Harmony With Divine Will

Living in harmony with Divine Will is certainly the goal of all real mystics and spiritual students. Those who call themselves spiritual but make no attempt to harmonize with Divine Will and Order are not really being spiritual at all.

We can divide this harmony with Divine Will into two levels for convenience. The first level is what Underhill is talking about here. This is when you are still a student, and still learning. You haven’t become one with God, so you can only try to know His Will. You do this with insight, intuition, and guidance from your spiritual teacher. At this level, you are mostly doing what others tell you to do.

As Ms. Underhill says, however, there is a higher level. A “closer contact,” as she puts it. It is becoming one with the Divine. That Divine Unity is usually temporary at first. Often no more than a quick flash the first time. But as you continue to grow, it will eventually become permanent. This is the ultimate Divine Harmony. thought principles, lingering thoughts, thought currents

Thought Currents and Dealing With Them

“We need to be careful of what we think and talk. Because thought runs in currents as real as those of air and water. Of what we think and talk we attract to us like a current of thought. This acts on mind or body for good or ill.

“If thought was visible to the physical eye we should see its currents flowing to and from people. We should see that persons similar in temperament, character and motive are in the same literal current of thought. We should see that the person in a despondent and angry mood was in the same current with others despondent or angry, and that each one is such moods serves as an additional battery or generator of such thought and is strengthening that particular current. We should see these forces working in similar manner and connection the hopeful, courageous and cheerful with all other hopeful, courageous and cheerful.” ~Prentice Mulford

Thought Currents

I have never thought of it quite that way, but the image created in my head by the phrase “thought currents” is certainly an accurate one. Thoughts are energy. There is no doubt about that. Scientific instruments of today can measure this energy. They do so  well enough to tell when you are deep in thought or when you are mentally relaxed. The thought flowing our from you and others near you create flows of energy. I visualize it as a river with eddies and currents where strong-willed individuals are thinking, or where people are deep in thought, and calm areas where others are doing little thinking. This river flows with many other towards a great sea of thought.

Flowing with Thought Currents

Just as you will tend to flow with the currents in the ocean, so do we tend to flow with the thought currents. Not only o they affect how we think, they can actually affect our behavior and health. For example, you may catch a disease you don’t even know exists simply because the people around you believe the germs causing the disease are in the area and are highly contagious. This may be difficult to accept, but if all those people started believing that this disease was not contagious, no one would get it. Though currents will carry us with them unless we actively resist like a swimmer swimming against the current. But like that swimmer, we will tire quickly and not progress much when going against a strong current. Continue reading “Thought Currents and Dealing With Them”
