Secret Magic of the Mystics and Wisemen

“Many persons have endeavoured to investigate and make use of the secret magic of these wise men; but it has not yet been accomplished. Many even of our own age exalt Trithemius, others Bacon and Agrippa; for magic and the cabala – two things apparently quite distinct – not knowing why they do so. Magic, indeed, is an art and faculty whereby the elementary bodies, their fruits, properties, virtues, and hidden operations are comprehended. But the cabala, by a subtle understanding of the Scriptures, seems to trace out the way to God for men, to show them how they may act with Him, and prophecy from Him; for the cabala is full of divine mysteries, even as magic is full of natural secrets. It teaches of and foretells from the nature of things to come as well as of things present, since its operation consists in knowing the inner constitution of all creatures, of celestial as well as terrestrial bodies: what is latent within them; what are their occult virtues; for what they were originally designed, and with what properties they are endowed. These and the like subjects are the bonds wherewith things celestial are bound up with things of the earth, as may sometimes be seen in their operations even with the bodily eyes.” ~Paracelsus

Secret Magic of the Wiseman

The magic Paracelsus is writing about is not simple stage magic. Neither is it the use of healing herbs or putting spells on people to heel or harm them. He is talking about spiritual magic. It is secret magic because it is not taught in public schools, or even in universities. It is taught only in mystery schools and advanced spiritual schools. It is not about tricking or controlling others. The secret magic is about self-transformation and transformation of the world.

Secret Magic and the Kabbala

Paracelsus says that Bacon, Agrippa, and Trithemius were exalted by some for their knowledge of magic and the Kabbala (which he spells “cabala”). He then states that these are two “apparently” distinct disciplines. I think the keyword in that phrase is “apparently”. I believe he is wording it that way to tell us that they are not so different, and in some ways may be the same thing. He doesn’t seem to truly explain the statement, yet follows it with two sentences stating what each discipline is.

He says that magic is an art for understanding the physical world and the properties of the things in it, both obvious properties and hidden ones. Then he says the Kabbala is more about leading people to God by showing them the path to God and the higher dimensions where God and the angels and found. Hat sounds like they are two very different things, but not so fast.

By learning through magic the secret properties of physical things, we find that those secret properties are spiritual in nature. So magic is also a form of awakening to the spiritual. So secret magic may be thought of as an early stage of the Path to God and enlightenment, and the Kabbala is a further continuation of that training and discipline. So they are different, but only in the way that grade school is different from high school.

Things to Come and Things Present

It is understandable why someone would want to belong to a discipline or learn a secret magic that allowed them to know at least some future events and trends, but why the present? It is because while the present is all around us, we are aware of only a tiny part of it. Often the part we are aware of, the part we are dealing with on a daily basis is not the most important part, or the most meaningful part. On a personal level, we may feel perfectly healthy, but have a dangerous disease beginning to grow in us. Or we may think we are perfectly safe walking down a street, not aware that a driver has lost control of his car and is about to slam into us. The ones with secret magic on their side, or as Paracelsus says, the ones who study the Kabbala would know.

And in addition to knowing about personal things in the present and future, the secret magic can help us know how the world is changing, how our country is changing, and how the entire physical universe is changing (which it is!). Having that knowledge can be of great advantage. It allows you to prepare for what is coming, and even participate when it is something good.

Gaining Secret Magic

Fortunately, the secret magic is not something found only in the mystery schools of the distant past or in secret mountain monasteries in Tibet. It is available to nearly all of us with the right training and the right disciplines. The most important discipline is to practice spiritual sun-gazing. Not ordinary sun gazing, but a spiritual variation of it. That is the secret magic of sun gazing. One can do ordinary sun-gazing and get some physical benefits, but you can also go beyond that to spiritual sun gazing that awakens and nourishes the spiritual faculties. The secret magic comes to those who have awakened and developed those faculties with devotion and dedication.

Secrets: Spiritual, Mystical, and Heavenly

“The truth and the secrets that I speak about—and the laying on of hands that is mine—not from people have I received it nor from fleshly creatures, not even from studies in the scriptures. But when my most blessed father, who called me into his grace, saw me, since he did not wish me and the rest who are in the world to perish, he felt compassion, so that he might extend his well-being to those prepared to be chosen by him from the sects. Then, by his grace, he pulled me from the council of the many who do not recognize the truth and revealed to me his secrets and those of his undefiled father and of all the cosmos. He disclosed to me how I was before the foundation of the world, and how the groundwork of all the works, both good and evil, was laid, and how everything of this aggregation was engendered according to its present boundaries and times.

“I, Mani, a messenger of Jesus Christ through the will of God, the father of truth, from whom I also was born, who lives and abides forever, existing before all and also abiding after all. All things that are and will subsist through his power. For from this very one I was conceived, and I am from his will. From Him, all that is true was revealed to me, and I am from His truth. The truth of ages that he revealed I have seen, and that truth I have disclosed to my fellow travelers; peace I have announced to the children of peace, hope I have proclaimed to the immortal race. The elect I have chosen, and a path to the height I have shown to those who ascend according to this truth. Hope I have proclaimed, and this revelation I have revealed. This immortal gospel I have written, including in it these eminent mysteries, and disclosing in it the greatest works, the greatest and most august forms of the most eminently powerful works. These things that he revealed I have shown to those who live from the truest vision, which I have seen, and from the most glorious revelation revealed to me.” ~On The Origin of His Body

Secrets That I speak

The secrets that Mani reveals are the secrets of nearly all ancient mystery schools and Gnostic groups. They are the secrets of the spiritual world and the secrets of the physical world. He says he did not receive these truths from “fleshly creatures,” or from a study of books and scripture. That is an important thing that all real spiritual students should note. Teachers, preachers, books and scripture can point us toward finding the truth, but it can come only from direct experience.

He Felt Compassion

It seems odd to some that God should kick us out of paradise and own to the realm of matter, then feel compassion for our plight here. But God didn’t send us here. That is a big part of the secrets. We sent ourselves when we—or our ancestors– violated His Universal Law. God won’t just pull us out of this hell-hole without us doing anything to deserve it, but he did provide us with the means to return to paradise: an eternal soul. It is as if he gave us a ladder to climb out of the hole, but we have to do the climbing ourselves. We have to make some effort.

Secrets of How I was Before the Foundation of the World

Most of us have completely forgotten what we were before we fell into the realm of matter. That was also true in Mani’s time. But one of the things that are revealed to us after our spiritual awakening is what we were before the fall and what we are destined to be again. It is easy enough to say we were spiritual beings rather than physical, but that is just a small part of it. The details are revealed to each of us individually, they are not found in books. Not even books of scripture.

Secrets Announced to the Children of Peace

While not everyone who desires peace is a spiritual person, it is true that all real spiritual people desire peace. Peace between nations and races, peace between species, peace between Man and Nature. Such people are the true Children of God and Children of Peace, for they have chosen to develop their spiritual Self, and push the material to the side. For this reason, the secrets of the universe can be revealed to them. Great effort is made to avoid reveling them to violent and materialistic people who are likely to misuse that knowledge. Hitler is an example of someone who gained just a few of those secrets, and nearly took over the world!

Secrets are Useful

So to those promoting the idea that governments, corporations, and individuals should not have secrets, I say “nonsense!” There are good reasons why some things should be kept secret. You don’t give a madman instructions on how to make bombs. You don’t reveal your national secrets to your enemies. And God doesn’t reveal the Universal Secrets to those who seek them for the wrong reasons. The only right reason is to participate in God’s Plan to transform the fallen realm of matter back into spirit.

Spiritual Secrets of Mystery Schools

“If you would know what eye has not seen nor ear heard and what has not arisen in the human heart, and who stands high above all good, swear to keep the mystery of instruction secret. Our father, who saw the good perfected in him, has kept the mysteries of silence secret. He has sworn and will not waver. Here is his oath: “I swear by the one over all, which is the Good, to keep these mysteries, to tell them to no one, and not to go from the Good back to the creation.” When you take this oath, you enter the Good and see what eye has not seen nor ear heard and what has not arisen in the human heart. You drink from the living water, the washing, the spring of living water bubbling up. ” ~Book of Baruch

Need for Secrets

There is a strong belief among many these days that there should be no secrets. Governments shouldn’t keep things secret from the people. Businesses should keep formulas and processes secret so only they can sell that product or service.

Even that much is not the great idea that it may seem to be at first. A government that can’t keep things secret could never negotiate treaties. A government that can’t develop new technologies in secret won’t bother to develop them at all. Likewise for a business that has to share all it develops with its competitors. So while an end to materialism and capitalism is desirable, until that happens, taking away the rights of governments and businesses to keep secrets is foolish.

Another reason to keep secrets is that it is dangerous to share certain information. I remember how upset many people got some years ago when a fool wrote and published a book with instruction on making bombs from easily obtained chemicals. It is obvious to those with a functioning brain that no one but a person desiring to harm others has any need to know how to build a bomb. When you write such a book, you know your customers will be terrorists and criminals. Claiming that you are not responsible for how people use the information you provide is stupid. Of course you are. Continue reading “Spiritual Secrets of Mystery Schools”

Wisdom of the Magi

“To attain the SANCTUM REGNUM, in other words, the power and knowledge of the Magi, there are four indispensable conditions – an intelligence illuminated by study, an intrepidity which nothing can check, a will which cannot be broken, and a prudence which nothing can corrupt and nothing intoxicate. TO KNOW, TO DARE, TO WILL, TO KEEP SILENT, – such are the four words of the Magus, inscribed upon the four symbolic forms of the sphinx. … The first of all magical sciences being the knowledge of one’s self, so is one’s own creation first of all works of science; it comprehends the others and is the beginning of the Great Work.” ~Eliphas Levi

Sphinx and pyramidI would add one very important thing, but I’ll get to it later. What Levi is saying is that to achieve real spiritual enlightenment and Gnosis, and not just some feel-good new age silliness, one has to do things and follow certain rules.

First, you have to study. This may initially start by reading books, but eventually must go beyond that. Just as a top scientist, lets say a physicist for example, doesn’t get there just by reading what earlier physicists have wrote, neither can the spiritual scientist (and spiritual study is a science, though very different from material science with different rules and methods). But once you have learned what you can from the books, which is primarily what you need to do to gain further enlightenment, you need to move on to other forms of study. You can experiment on you own, but that’s somewhat like getting one of those live oysters on the boardwalk in the hope that you will find a great and perfect pearl inside. The odds of that happening are very slim. A better choice is to find a reputable spiritual teacher or spiritual school to continue your studies with. This is necessary because much of the teaching are never written, or are written only in a codified form that cannot be understood without knowing the key (most of the Dead Sea Scrolls are in this category).
