house of fire

House of Fire in the Realm of Matter

“A Messenger in a vision saw people locked up in a house of fire and bound with fiery chains, lying in a flaming ointment. He asked them, “Why can’t they be saved?” “We did not desire it,” they told the messenger, “but we got this place of punishment. It is the outer darkness, and we are in it.”

“Soul and spirit came into being from water and fire. From water and fire and light came the attendant in the bridal chamber. Fire is chrism. Light is fire. I am not referring to flame, which has no form, but to another kind of fire, whose appearance is white, which is luminous and beautiful and gives beauty.

“Truth didn’t come into the world naked but in types and images. Truth is received only that way. There is rebirth and its image.”

“They must be reborn through image. What is the resurrection? Image must rise again through image. The bridegroom and image enter through image into truth, which is restoration. It is right that those who don’t have it take on the name of the father and son and the holy spirit. But they have not done so on their own. If you do not take on the names for yourself, the name “Christian” will be taken from you. You receive them in the oil of the chrism, the aromatic unction of the power of the cross. The messengers called this power “the right and left.” You are no longer a Christian but Christ.

“The lord did everything through mystery: baptism and a chrism and a Eucharist and a redemption and a bridal chamber.

“The lord said, “I came to make things below like things above, and the outside like the inside. I came to join them in one place. He revealed who he is through types and images.” ~The Gospel of Philip

House of Fire

The destructive house of fire is the material world that we live in. It is a house of fire because it operates in a constant self of self-destruction mixed with creation. Some think this is how it should be, but it isn’t. God doesn’t create things and beings only to destroy them a short time later. What God creates is permanent; not consumed by fire, disease, or rot. This means that the house of fire is not a creation of God. It is a creation of what the Gnostics call the Demiurge. And since it was not created by the One Perfect Consciousness that is God, it is defective and self-destructive.

According to Philip, the people in this house of fire are bound in chains of fire and lying in flaming ointment. This is his way of saying that we not only live in a self-destructive realm, but we add to it ourselves by wrapping ourselves in chains of fire and coat ourselves with flammable oils. The fiery chains are false beliefs that we cling to thereby preventing us from seeing the truth. The flaming ointments and oils are our attachments to material things that pull us down to destruction along with them. Continue reading “House of Fire in the Realm of Matter”

burn that heals

Burn That Heals and Awakens the Spirit

“Thus sang the initiates of Dionysus:

‘O burn that burns to heal!
O more than pleasant wound!
And O soft hand,
O touch most delicate that dost new life reveal
That dost in grace abound
And, slaying, dost from death to life translate.’

“Here the joy is as passionate, the consciousness of an exalted life as intense: but it is dominated by the distinctive Christian concepts of humility, surrender, and intimate love.

“We have seen that all real artists, as well as all pure mystics, are sharers to some degree in the Illuminated Life. They have drunk, with Blake, from that cup of intellectual vision which is the chalice of the spirit of life. Know something of its divine inebriation whenever beauty inspires them to create. Some have only sipped it. Other, like John of Parma, have drunk deep, accepting in that act the mystic heritage with all its obligations. But to all who have seen beauty face to face, the Grail has been administered; and through that sacramental communion they are made participants to the mystery of the world.” ~Evelyn Underhill

Burn that Heals

Sometimes, the medicine that cures an illness seems almost as bad as the illness itself. Although that may not be as true today as it was when I was a kid. I remember getting dosed frequently with the horrid cod liver oil when I was young. And it didn’t come in a convenient capsule you could just swallow like the fish oil capsules of today. You had to take it by the spoon and taste it. Sometimes you told your mother you were feeling must better just to prevent her from giving you another dose.

The burn that heals is a lot like that bitter medicine. It doesn’t literally burn, but it makes you face the truth about yourself and your past. Burn one: you learned that things were not always as they seemed to be. Burn two: you learned that some of you closest beliefs that you clung to for years are completely false. Burn, burn, burn.

“I fell into a burning ring of fire
I went down, down, down and the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns
The ring of fire, the ring of fire” ~Merle Kilgore, June Carter

June Carter wrote of a burning ring of fire which her future husband, Johnny Cash, made into a hit song. Carter was supposedly writing about her love for Cash. So here is another example of a burn that heals: a burning love. But that isn’t exactly what Underhill is talking about. Even if she didn’t realize it herself, the burn that heals by making the material become spiritual is the spiritual sun, or Sun of Righteousness. This sun is sending special frequencies into us that are helping us awaken. The prophet Malachi wrote that this sun would burn up the evil in the world. That is the best kind of burn that heals.

Grace Abounds

The Burn that heals burns away the veil or shell that blocks us from receiving grace. Grace meaning the higher frequency light of the spiritual sun that awakens the spirit and soul and helps them grow strong. This is real grace. Yes, it is God blessing you. But it is also God healing you.

Death to Life

How does the burn that heals bring life to death? To be totally accurate, it doesn’t. What it does do is awaken the dormant spiritual faculties. When those faculties are dormant, they are as good as dead, so awakening them is much like bringing the dead back to life. And while there may have been one or two cases of Jesus actually bringing a physically dead person back to life, in most cases it is this bringing the “dead” spirit and soul back to life that He did.

Mystic Heritage

The ancient mystics and students of the mystery schools were the true students of spiritual development. They knew the burn that heals very well. They did not just, in arrogance, declare themselves to be spiritual and awakened. They worked hard to make it happen.

Times have changed, however, and devoting one’s life completely to the spiritual development of the true Self, and aiding others to do the same, is not necessary or practical. Until a few centuries ago, those who devoted themselves to the spiritual were happily supported by the communities they lived in. Today, that rarely happens. In North America and Europe, even the long-established churches are struggling to maintain their membership while fighting off attempts to take away their tax-free status or put them under greater government control. At this point in time, the materialists are winning this battle, but not for much longer.

But it is still possible to follow the mystic heritage and partake of the spiritual light with the burn that heals. We can do it while still holding a regular job, having a family, and living in a private house. It isn’t necessary to enter a monastery. It is, however, still necessary to go beyond the superficial spirituality of meditating and owning crystals to make any real progress. The burn that heals needs to burn deep.

universal forces

Universal Forces and Beings of Fire and Light

“The Sons of Fire act upon the etheric body in so far as the independent formation of the human being becomes imprinted upon it. …

“The Sons of Life act on the physical body in such a way that it is able to become the expression of the astral body which has now become independent. They thus make it possible for the physical body to become a physiognomic copy of its astral body. On the other hand, higher spiritual beings, in particular the Lords of Form and of Motion, reach down into the physical and etheric bodies, as far as these are developed during the Sun periods, regardless of the independent astral body. Their intervention comes from the Sun, in the manner described above.

“Under the influence of such facts, the human being gradually matures to a point where it can develop within itself the germ of the Spirit-Self just as during the second half of the Saturn evolution it developed the germ of the Spirit-Man and on the Sun that of the Life-Spirit. Thereby all the Moon conditions are changes.” ~Rudolf Steiner

Sons of Fire and Life as Universal Forces

It is not clear what Steiner means by the Sons of Fire and the Sons of Life. Yet it seems from the rest of the quote that they have something to do with man becoming physical. The physiognomy of a thing is it’s outward appearance. So I think he is saying that these “beings” give us physical form.

I put beings in quotes because I don’t think that these Sons of Fire and Sons of Life are actual beings in the normal sense. I think it is a personification of the universal forces that tend to pull beings further and further into matter.

They can also be the beings we call demons and devils, or simply dark beings. How exactly the Sons of Fire and the Sons of Life differ, I don’t know, but I don’t think it matters. The point is, these two types of forces or beings are encouraging us to become more of matter and less of spirit. If they succeed in making us pure matter, we will be lost forever.

Higher Spiritual Beings

On the other side of the coin, there are spiritual forces and spiritual beings that try to pull us back into the realm of spirit where we belong. The spiritual beings include those called Angels and Beings of Light. They are also universal forces.

Where things are a little confusing is that sometimes beings that are not physical are not easily distinguishable from universal forces. The may be different, or they may be just different views of the same thing. But it really doesn’t matter.

Solar Intervention

Steiner says the intervention of these spirit beings comes from the Sun. This should not be a surprise to anyone. Most forces and energies that control us here on Earth do come through the sun. Even those that originate with God and spiritual beings come to us through the spiritual sun. The sun is a source of universal forces and beings as well. It may even be considered a living being as well as a universal force.

Steiner says that under their influence, human beings “gradually mature”. This does not mean aging in the physical sense. Nor does it mean mental maturity, although that generally comes along with it. It is a spiritual maturity that Steiner is talking about. But even on that level, it doesn’t mean aging. What it really means is returning to the spiritual state we existed in before the fallen world of matter existed. And we can channel those universal forces through ourselves to benefit others.

Rill of Fire for Unity and Enlightenment

“From the gladness and the fullness of grace and the faithfulness of God, there is born and flows forth the third rill in this same unity of the spirit. This rill, like a fire, kindles the will, and swallows up and consumes everything into unity. And if fills to the brim and flows through all the powers of the soul, with rich gifts and with a singular nobility: and it calls forth in the will a tender spiritual love without effort. …

“Go ye out to practice in conformity with these gifts and with this coming. … By the third rill, which is an in-pouring heat, the supreme will has been rekindled in tranquil love, and has been endowed with great riches. Thus has the man become spiritually enlightened.” ~John of Ruysbroeck

Rill of Fire

Unity is almost always a good thing. This is especially true of spiritual unity. Ruysbroeck says this “flows forth” from the “third rill”. Rill being an old word for a brook or small river, is a reasonable word to use to describe this energy flow, especially in a time when the idea of energy waves was unknown.

This rill of fire, which Ruysbroeck call the third rill, may not truly be different from the other two, but just a different aspect or angle of it. These rills are all flows of grace or spiritual energy. This rill burns up egotism and false beliefs. It prepares us to know the truth. You can’t know truth and firmly believe in falsehood at the same time. Those false beliefs are walls and roadblocks against reality. Continue reading “Rill of Fire for Unity and Enlightenment”
