secret fire

Secret Fire of the Alchemists and Mystics

“IN H. P. Blavatsky’s ‘The Voice of the Silence,’ the secret fire of the Alchemists is described as ‘Kundalini,’ the ‘serpentine,’ or annular working power in the body of the ascetic. ‘It is an electric fiery occult or Fohatic power, the greatest pristine force which underlies all organic and inorganic matter’; and in another place the author says: ‘it is an electro-spiritual force, a creative power which, when aroused into action, can as easily kill as it can create.’

“This point is the reason why the secrets of Alchemy are not divulged to the curious, and why only those who have gained the power to control their own self will be told how that power can be aroused in man.

“In regard to this ‘secret fire,’ the Rosicrucians say:’The potentialities in nature are aroused by the action of the secret fire, assisted by the elementary fire. The secret fire is invisible, and is contained within all things. It is the most potential and powerful fire, with which the external visible fire cannot be compared. It is the fire with which Moses burned the golden calf, and that which Jeremiah hid away, and which seventy years after was found by the knowing ones, but which by that time had become a thick water.’

“Without the possession of this magic fire, no alchemical process can be accomplished.” ~Franz Hartmann

Secret Fire of the Alchemists

As has been explained in several previous articles on this blog, the real purpose of alchemy was not to change one type of metal into another but to change the lead man of materialism into the gold man of spirit. So when Hartmann speaks of the secret fire of Alchemists, it could as easily be called the secret fire of spiritual awakening and spiritual development, or the secret fire of the mystics.

This secret fire is not a fire in the material sense, and most modern spiritual schools prefer to call it Light or Spiritual Light rather than fire. Because it is a spiritual thing, it is impossible to accurately describe in languages created to describe the physical world. So fire, light, energy, force, and others are all reasonable accurate, but not exact. And the secret fire is secret in two ways. One, it is invisible, unnoticed, by materialistic people. Two, when you look at others, unless you are very advanced in your spiritual studies, you cannot tell how much spiritual fire, if any, a particular individual may have. fire and light

Fire and Light and the Creative Trinity

“All things such as we see are in their interior fire and light, wherin is hidden the essence of the spirit. All things are a trinity of fire, light, and air. In other words, ‘Spirit,‘ the ‘Father,‘ is a divine superessential light; the ‘son,’ the light having become manifest; the ‘holy spirit,’ a divine superessential air and motion. The fire resides within the heart and sends its rays through the whole body of man, causing it to live; but no light is born from the fire without the presence of the spirit of holiness.

“To express this in other words we may say—All things are made of thought, and exist in the universal mind (the astral light), and within each is latent the will, by whose action they may become developed and their powers unfolded. This takes place under favorable circumstances by the slow and unconscious action of the universal will acting in nature, and may be accomplished in a very short time by the aid of the conscious will of the alchemist; but before the will of a person can accomplish such wonders in external substances, his will must first become self-conscious within itself; the light that shines from the center of his own heart, must become living and bright before it can act upon those substances with which the alchemist deals. He in whom this divine light of the Christ (the atma) has not awakened to life, is virtually asleep in the spirit, and can act upon spiritual things no more than a man can deal with material substances while he sleeps.” ~Franz Hartmann

All Things Fire and Light

While it is true that the ancient holy ones often said that we all are “fire and light” within, it must be understood that this should not be taken too literally. To them, “fire” often meant energy of any kind, so they were really saying that we are actually energy and light.

Essence of Spirit

The essence of spirit is found in energy and, more specifically, Light. But not just any light, spiritual light. You won’t find it in a fluorescent light bulb, a sodium street lamp, or even a neon sign. Spirit light must have a spiritual source, and the primary source of spiritual light on Earth is the Spiritual Sun.

In fact, since the human spirit and soul are pure spirit, and not matter at all, they are made of spiritual light and they live on spiritual light. And if humanity transforms as God wants us too, we will one day exist entirely on Light and not have to kill and eat other beings to survive. house of fire

House of Fire in the Realm of Matter

“A Messenger in a vision saw people locked up in a house of fire and bound with fiery chains, lying in a flaming ointment. He asked them, “Why can’t they be saved?” “We did not desire it,” they told the messenger, “but we got this place of punishment. It is the outer darkness, and we are in it.”

“Soul and spirit came into being from water and fire. From water and fire and light came the attendant in the bridal chamber. Fire is chrism. Light is fire. I am not referring to flame, which has no form, but to another kind of fire, whose appearance is white, which is luminous and beautiful and gives beauty.

“Truth didn’t come into the world naked but in types and images. Truth is received only that way. There is rebirth and its image.”

“They must be reborn through image. What is the resurrection? Image must rise again through image. The bridegroom and image enter through image into truth, which is restoration. It is right that those who don’t have it take on the name of the father and son and the holy spirit. But they have not done so on their own. If you do not take on the names for yourself, the name “Christian” will be taken from you. You receive them in the oil of the chrism, the aromatic unction of the power of the cross. The messengers called this power “the right and left.” You are no longer a Christian but Christ.

“The lord did everything through mystery: baptism and a chrism and a Eucharist and a redemption and a bridal chamber.

“The lord said, “I came to make things below like things above, and the outside like the inside. I came to join them in one place. He revealed who he is through types and images.” ~The Gospel of Philip

House of Fire

The destructive house of fire is the material world that we live in. It is a house of fire because it operates in a constant self of self-destruction mixed with creation. Some think this is how it should be, but it isn’t. God doesn’t create things and beings only to destroy them a short time later. What God creates is permanent; not consumed by fire, disease, or rot. This means that the house of fire is not a creation of God. It is a creation of what the Gnostics call the Demiurge. And since it was not created by the One Perfect Consciousness that is God, it is defective and self-destructive.

According to Philip, the people in this house of fire are bound in chains of fire and lying in flaming ointment. This is his way of saying that we not only live in a self-destructive realm, but we add to it ourselves by wrapping ourselves in chains of fire and coat ourselves with flammable oils. The fiery chains are false beliefs that we cling to thereby preventing us from seeing the truth. The flaming ointments and oils are our attachments to material things that pull us down to destruction along with them. Continue reading “House of Fire in the Realm of Matter”

burn that heals

Burn That Heals and Awakens the Spirit

“Thus sang the initiates of Dionysus:

‘O burn that burns to heal!
O more than pleasant wound!
And O soft hand,
O touch most delicate that dost new life reveal
That dost in grace abound
And, slaying, dost from death to life translate.’

“Here the joy is as passionate, the consciousness of an exalted life as intense: but it is dominated by the distinctive Christian concepts of humility, surrender, and intimate love.

“We have seen that all real artists, as well as all pure mystics, are sharers to some degree in the Illuminated Life. They have drunk, with Blake, from that cup of intellectual vision which is the chalice of the spirit of life. Know something of its divine inebriation whenever beauty inspires them to create. Some have only sipped it. Other, like John of Parma, have drunk deep, accepting in that act the mystic heritage with all its obligations. But to all who have seen beauty face to face, the Grail has been administered; and through that sacramental communion they are made participants to the mystery of the world.” ~Evelyn Underhill

Burn that Heals

Sometimes, the medicine that cures an illness seems almost as bad as the illness itself. Although that may not be as true today as it was when I was a kid. I remember getting dosed frequently with the horrid cod liver oil when I was young. And it didn’t come in a convenient capsule you could just swallow like the fish oil capsules of today. You had to take it by the spoon and taste it. Sometimes you told your mother you were feeling must better just to prevent her from giving you another dose.

The burn that heals is a lot like that bitter medicine. It doesn’t literally burn, but it makes you face the truth about yourself and your past. Burn one: you learned that things were not always as they seemed to be. Burn two: you learned that some of you closest beliefs that you clung to for years are completely false. Burn, burn, burn.

“I fell into a burning ring of fire
I went down, down, down and the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns
The ring of fire, the ring of fire” ~Merle Kilgore, June Carter

June Carter wrote of a burning ring of fire which her future husband, Johnny Cash, made into a hit song. Carter was supposedly writing about her love for Cash. So here is another example of a burn that heals: a burning love. But that isn’t exactly what Underhill is talking about. Even if she didn’t realize it herself, the burn that heals by making the material become spiritual is the spiritual sun, or Sun of Righteousness. This sun is sending special frequencies into us that are helping us awaken. The prophet Malachi wrote that this sun would burn up the evil in the world. That is the best kind of burn that heals.

Grace Abounds

The Burn that heals burns away the veil or shell that blocks us from receiving grace. Grace meaning the higher frequency light of the spiritual sun that awakens the spirit and soul and helps them grow strong. This is real grace. Yes, it is God blessing you. But it is also God healing you.

Death to Life

How does the burn that heals bring life to death? To be totally accurate, it doesn’t. What it does do is awaken the dormant spiritual faculties. When those faculties are dormant, they are as good as dead, so awakening them is much like bringing the dead back to life. And while there may have been one or two cases of Jesus actually bringing a physically dead person back to life, in most cases it is this bringing the “dead” spirit and soul back to life that He did.

Mystic Heritage

The ancient mystics and students of the mystery schools were the true students of spiritual development. They knew the burn that heals very well. They did not just, in arrogance, declare themselves to be spiritual and awakened. They worked hard to make it happen.

Times have changed, however, and devoting one’s life completely to the spiritual development of the true Self, and aiding others to do the same, is not necessary or practical. Until a few centuries ago, those who devoted themselves to the spiritual were happily supported by the communities they lived in. Today, that rarely happens. In North America and Europe, even the long-established churches are struggling to maintain their membership while fighting off attempts to take away their tax-free status or put them under greater government control. At this point in time, the materialists are winning this battle, but not for much longer.

But it is still possible to follow the mystic heritage and partake of the spiritual light with the burn that heals. We can do it while still holding a regular job, having a family, and living in a private house. It isn’t necessary to enter a monastery. It is, however, still necessary to go beyond the superficial spirituality of meditating and owning crystals to make any real progress. The burn that heals needs to burn deep.
