Fall and Resurrection of Man and the World

“’For the fall and resurrection of many in Israel is the lord appointed’, says the Holy Gospel (Luke :34). We should ask consequently whether He may not be appointed for the fall of those who contemplate the visible creation solely according to the senses and to those who stick to the mere letter of Holy Scripture, not being able in their folly to go further and grasp the new spirit of grace. And we should ask whether He may not be appointed for the resurrection of those who contemplate God’s creatures and listen to His words in a spiritual manner, cultivating in appropriate ways only the divine image that is within the soul.

“If the Lord’s being appointed for the fall and resurrection of many is understood in the right way, than the fall will refer to that of the passions and of evil thoughts in each of the faithful, and the resurrection to that of the virtues and of every thought that enjoys God’s blessing.” ~The Philokalia

Fall and Resurrection

This quote from the Philokalia is using fall and resurrection with a dual meaning. We are all familiar with the greater meaning: the symbolic fall of Adam and Eve from Heaven to Earth, and the resurrection of Jesus back to Heaven. But here they are talking more of an individual fall from grace, and resurrection back into a state of grace. Both variations are valid. As above, so below.

Contemplating Visible Creation

There are primarily three ways to look at the physical universe or visible creation:

  1. It is the one and only creation. Nothing exists but the physical.
  2. It is an illusion and there is nothing real.
  3. There is more than the physical and the physical is not all that it appears to be.

Those who accept the first or second point-of-view are generally not good candidates for spiritual development. Those who accept the third usually are. The quote is saying that Jesus came to help those in the third group find the best path to follow for a true awakening. He didn’t waste His time on the materialist who cannot accept anything spiritual, or who consider the spiritual just an extension of the physical.

The good news is that it is becoming harder to stay trapped in the materialistic viewpoint. With quantum physics agreeing with the spiritual types that the physical universe is not what it appears to be. Specifically, they say it is a hologram. The physicists may not be saying so, but if you think about it, a hologram, being a projection of light, must have a source. The source cannot be the hologram itself. Therefore, there has to be something beyond the physical realm from which the great illusion is being projected.

Letter of Scripture

A similar kind of person to those who believe only in the physical are those who interpret everything in scripture and holy books literally. The Philokalia correctly classifies those people as fallen souls also. Those who are true believers then come to foolish conclusions such as the Earth is only six thousand years old. Those who are not believers say that the holy books are lies because they are obviously not literally true. Both of those groups fail to recognize that most scripture of any religion is written in allegory. This is done partly to make it understandable to the less educated. Mostly, however, it is done to hide the truth from the profane who would misuse such knowledge.

Contemplate God’s Creatures

The quote says that the Lord is not appointed to help those who “contemplate God’s creatures and listen to His words in a spiritual manner.” This seems illogical. Should He be helping those most of all? I think the intention here is to say that those who have already found the true path of their own don’t need the Lord’s help. Unless, of course, they stray off the path.

So how do you contemplate God’s creatures in a spiritual manner? St. Francis is probably the best example of how. After his awakening, he says all beings as spirits. I believe he could actually see beyond the mask of the physical body to the spirit of each being. For that reason, he referred to animals, plants, and everything as his brothers and sisters.

Likewise, anything that Jesus said in public or private talks needs to be interpreted in a spiritual way, much like with allegorical scripture. And this goes for all other religious and spiritual leaders.

I remember reading some years ago of a small (fortunately!) cult in India that follow the teachings of one particular Guru. The guru said in a popular speech that men must be more like women if they want to be saved. It should be obvious that this was not supposed to be taken literally, but figuratively. But the members of the cult interpret it literally. The male members castrate themselves and dress like women. This, they believe, will save them. We laugh at their foolishness. Yet it is no more foolish than those who believe that a priest actually turns bread and water into the flesh and blood of Jesus, and then they consume His flesh and blood to be saved.

Things said by spiritual people must be interpreted in a spiritual way. Literal interpretation leads to false conclusions, much like that sad cult.

Resurrection of Virtue and Blessed Thought

On a personal level, we need to be “resurrected” or awakened to a life of virtue and service to God. This does not mean slavery. The awakened serve God because they recognize that He knows more than they do about everything. When journeying through a strange land, following a guide who knows the path and the dangers isn’t slavery. It is being smart. Yet there are those who will still fight against the idea. They don’t realize that by doing so, they are serving the fallen angels who did the same thing long ago. So either way, they are serving someone.

The smart person will accept resurrection, and not fall even further into the clutches of matter.

shine, Sun of Righteousness

Shine With the Sun of Righteousness

“When the Lords of Wisdom begin to stream forth their etheric body, the Sun, previously dark, begins to shine. At the same time the first appearances of inner activity are seen in the human germ; life has begun. What had to be described as a semblance of life on Saturn now becomes actual life. The influx lasts for a certain time, at the end of which an import and change for the human germ sets in—that is to say, it organizes itself into two parts. Whereas up to this point the physical and etheric bodies formed an intimately connected whole, the physical body now begins to detach itself as a separate part. Yet even that separated physical body is still pervaded by the etheric body. Therefore we have now to do with a human being composed of two principles. One portion is a physical body permeated by an etheric body; the other is an etheric body and nothing else. This separation comes to pass, however, during a period of rest in the Sun life. During this pause the shining, which had begun to appear, dies away. The separation takes place during a ‘cosmic night,’ as it were.” ~Rudolf Steiner

Sun Begins to Shine

Wait a minute. Doesn’t the sun always shine? Yes and no. Steiner is not talking about the physical light of the physical sun. He is talking about the spiritual light of the spiritual sun. so what Steiner is saying in an allegorical way is that the sun doesn’t truly shine until it shines with the eternal light of spirit.

The spiritual sun has been shining for quite a long time, so exactly when it started to shine doesn’t really matter to us. What does matter is why it shines.

To Whom it May Concern

If we were purely material beings, it would not matter at all if the spiritual sun shines. But we are not purely material beings. We are just as much spiritual beings, if not more. And the plants and animals have spirits as well. And spirits are not nourished by the physical sun. They need the spiritual light of the spiritual sun.

The spiritual sun is not always the same. We are fortunate enough to be living in the time of a special version of the spiritual sun called the Sun of Righteousness. This is the sun the Old Testament prophet Malachi wrote about. It is brighter than the previous spiritual sun and continues to get brighter all the time. This sun can awaken the dormant spirits and souls or humans more easily than the previous sun. Still, we have to try if that is to happen to us. The sun is not going too pull us out of bed, shake us, and shout “Wake Up!” At us. It sends more subtle signals to us that are gradually waking up some of us. And as more and more of us are awakened, it becomes easier for others to follow.

Split Man

At the beginning of the fall into matter, Steiner says man split into two parts. One part being pure spirit, or what he calls “etheric”. The other part being almost pure matter, with only a bit of spirit left in it. This makes sense when we consider what we know about our energy centers. Each of our spiritual energy centers forms two centers on the psychic and physical levels of being.

Yet there are some who disagree with Steiner. They say that man, as a total, descended from spirit into matter. That prior to the fall, man had no matter in him at all. In fact, matter didn’t exist until the fall, when it was created by the error of the Demiurge. That seems to be more accurate to me. Perhaps Steiner meant his version to be more allegorical than literal.

Cosmic Night and a New Dawn

Steiner says this separation of man takes place during a period of darkness he labels the Cosmic Night. Of course, darkness here is a relative term and refers primarily to a lack of spiritual light. The physical sun still shines, but the spiritual sun is dim.

But as already noted, that time is over. The Sun of Righteousness has arrived and we are at the dawn of a new Golden Age. What happens next depends as much on us as on God and the angels. We can work hard to transform ourselves into more and more spiritual beings until we become pure spirits once again. God will help, of course, but He won’t do it for us. Because He gave us a certain degree of free will, we must make the decision to change and work at it. If we do this, Earth and everything on it will transform to spirit as well. If we don’t, we will fall even further into matter and be lost forever.

Primordial Life of Infinite Love

“For as long as you were outside the material world, you were idealists; you strived toward God and desired to sacrifice, to share everything. Nevertheless, when you descended into the material world, you forgot everything. In the process of descending, you lost something. You need to return to that state in which you were at the Beginning. Since ancient times, many beings ave lost their primordial, sublime life. The infinite Love of God strives to permeate them so that He may restore the Life and Light they have lost. Love wants to awaken all those who have fallen asleep. …

“A new epoch is now coming for humankind in which the Intelligent World will show people the way that they can return to their primordial life and come to stand on good, solid ground. At present, most people live amid life’s illusions.” ~Biensa Douno

Outside the Material World

If we were outside the material world, how did we eat, breath, sleep, etc? Could we even exist at all outside of the world of matter? Yes we could. Our real self could. Our physical body couldn’t, but it is but a shell or mask we are briefly in while stuck in the realm of matter. The real self is spirit. As such, it is eternal. Spirit exists outside of the limits of space and time. Therefore, our spirit and soul could, and did, exist outside the material world. This is what Douno is calling our primordial life.

Strived Toward God

We strived toward God in several ways. One way is that we tried to get closer to God. Not in a physical sense, but in terms of frequency and level of consciousness. Yet we did that with the idea of serving God better, not trying to take control from him. The idea of rebelling against God was the furthest thing from our spiritual minds.

Another way in which we strived toward God is that we sought to do whatever we could to further His Divine Plan. Exactly hat that might have been before the Great Fall, we don’t know. We do now that after the fall, he plan is to reclaim the lost part of the spiritual realm that became the fallen land of matter.

Primordial Infinite Love

In that primordial world, we had infinite love. Because most of us have lost touch with our spiritual faculties, we no longer feel that. But we can regain that primordial love for all. We simply have to awaken our dormant spiritual faculties.

Douno says that infinite love from God now tries to permeate everything in the physical realm. He further says love wants to awaken all who sleep. I’m not sure we can say that the energy that is making that transformation happen is love, but there is no doubt that God’s Love is the reason the transformation is happening.

A New Epoch

Many wonder why God has waited so long to correct the problems created by the Great Fall into matter. They forget that in the spiritual world of God and the angels, there is no space or time. So while God, from the perspective of that realm, may have fixed the problem instantly, it can take millions of years to manifest on our level where time and space do exist. Another reason is because God gave us a certain amount of free will. We must, therefore, choose to return to that primordial state of pure spirit before God will complete the transformation. But as we now enter a new epoch, God has sent His Sun of Righteousness into our physical sun to help awaken as many as possible. We can also help with that by letting others know that awakening is both possible and necessary. And when I say awaken, I don’t simply mean becoming aware that the physical realm is full of lies and illusion. I’m talking about bringing the dormant spirit and soul back to full consciousness. That is a process that has to be worked at, usually for years. People who claim to have done it instantly are living in fantasies. Continue reading “Primordial Life of Infinite Love”

matter, involution, Impacting and degrading the world

Involution and Evolution From a Spiritual View Point

“Involution is turning away from God, and evolution is returning to God. Involution is leaving home and going to work Evolution is returning home from work with the experience that one has acquired. Moving down means moving into darkness climbing up is rising toward the Light.

“The story of the fall of man into error is one of the greatest mysteries of life. The story has a symbolic bearing upon the issue of involution. It concerns the time when man was with God and dwelt among the angels. …

“For as long as you were outside the material world, you were idealists: you strived toward God and desired to sacrifice, to share everything. Nevertheless, when you descended into the material world, you forgot everything. In the process of descending, you lost something.” ~Biensa Douno

Devolution, Involution and Evolution

Douno chose to use the word “involution” rather than “Devolution” to describe the great fall and the opposite of evolution. An interesting choice.

Involution is defined as: the act or instance of enfolding or entangling. An inward curvature or penetration, a shrinking or returning to a former size. From the first part of that definition, we can see that an entangling, or attachment, with mater causes one to descend into matter. The inward curvature part is here we began to trust our individual self rather than God and the angels. And descending into matter is certainly a shrinking from what we were as pure spirits. Nevertheless, I think it is cleared to most to call this activity “devolution”. We love to think we are evolving, but when we sink deeper and deeper into matter, we are actually devolving.

Returning to God

There are some complicated ideas on what constitutes evolution on the material plane. Obviously, every change, every mutation cannot be considered evolution. Most scientists say that if it improves the species, it is evolution. But what seems to be an improvement on the level of matter is often devolution on the spiritual level. Douno says evolution is returning to God. That simple definition says it all. As long as the change is moving us back to God and the realms of spirit and Light, it is evolution. No matter how useful it may seem, movement in the opposite direction is devolution (or involution). Continue reading “Involution and Evolution From a Spiritual View Point”
