Authors of Evil and Defeating Them

Authors of Evil

“The greatest authors and instigators of evil are ignorance, self-love and tyranny. Each depends on the other two and is supported by them: from ignorance of God comes self-love, and from self-love comes tyranny over one’s own kind. The devil establishes these in us when we misuse our pwn powers, namely our intelligence, our desire and our incentive power.

“By intelligence we should be stimulated to overcome our ignorance and to seek the one and only God by means of spiritual knowledge; through desire – through a passion of self-love which has been purified – we should be drawn in longing to the one God; and with an incentive power divorced from all tyrannical propensity we should struggle to attain God alone. From these three powers of the Soul we should actualize that divine and blessed love on account of which they exist, that love which joins the devout man to God and reveals him to be a god. …

“We should care for ourselves and each other in the way that Christ Himself, who patiently suffered fro us, has already shown us in His own person.

“For the sake of love all the saints resisted sin, not showing any regard for the present life: and they endured many forms of death, in order to be separated from the world and united with themselves and God, joining together in themselves the broken fragments of human nature.” ~The Philokalia

Ignorance

While it may be true that ignorance, self-love (more on this later), and tyranny are the greatest authors of evil, I think we can safely say that the greatest of these is ignorance, specifically ignorance of God and Spiritual Truth. This is because only one who is ignorant of truth can have the other two traits. So if we want to develop our spiritual self, we need to concentrate on ending our ignorance. The rest will follow automatically.

Ignorance of God doesn’t just mean that someone doesn’t believe in God. It also applies to the many millions who have no first-hand knowledge of God, but rely on the written or spoken word of others to inform them of God. Such written or spoken descriptions are never accurate because God is so much more than human language is capable of expressing. We must know God from personal experience by reaching to the higher levels of being and consciousness where God and the Angels are found.

Self-Love

This is a tricky one. We absolutely do need to love ourselves, but only in a certain way. It can’t be in an arrogant, narcissistic way. It can’t be in a way that we put ourselves above others. Rather we must love ourselves as equal to others, not better. I really believe that one reason many people today can’t believe in God is that their narcissism won’t allow them to accept that another being is superior. In truth, you can’t really love others if you have no love for yourself. Having proper self-love doesn’t mean that you accept everything you do and don’t want to change a thing. You can love yourself and still desire to grow and change. So as far as authors of evil go, self-love is not always one of them.

Tyranny

Tyranny is definitely an author of evil. If you have tyranny in you, you cannot love all beings as God requires. You also must still be in ignorance of God to some degree, or your tyrannical ways would end.

Note that practicing tyranny “over one’s own kind” isn’t limited to tyrannical government leaders. It can be a business manager, a school teacher, or even a parent lording over their children. It isn’t the position, but the behavior that determines a tyrant. But a tyrant who wants to can reform. A tyrant who wants to awaken and develop their spiritual Self MUST reform.

The way to do that is the same for most forms of bad behavior. Before you go to sleep at night, review your day mentally. Were you mean to others? Were you too easy to anger? Did you rule over others with tyranny? If the answer to these, and similar questions is “Yes,” you need to think about how you can do better the next time, and vow to make the effort to do so. It also helps to awaken your spiritual faculties so you will know and love God, and all that He created. You cannot be a tyrant with those you love.

Spiritual Development

The way to defeat all the authors of evil, even ones that were not mentioned in this passage from The Philokalia, is to awaken and develop your spiritual Self. You do that by using the Light of the Spiritual Sun and practicing Spiritual Sun-Gazing. This is not the same as physical sun-gazing, I. e., gazing at the physical sun, though we have to do that as a starting point. Proper sun gazing doesn’t mean staring at the sun. Not only is that concentrating too much on the physical, it can cause serious harm to your eyes. It has to be done in a subtle way that is taught in real spiritual schools such as the school of Cosolargy. When done properly, sun gazing will gradually shift from the physical sun to the Spiritual Sun and a true awakening of the soul will happen. That is the way to defeat the authors of evil.

scavengers

Scavengers and Doves: Not Evil or Good

“Being scavengers, the vulture, the buzzard, and the condor signified that form of divine power which by disposing of refuse and other matter dangerous to the life and health of humanity cleanses and purifies the lower spheres. These birds were therefore adopted as symbols of the disintegrative processes which accomplish good while apparently destroying, and by some religions have been mistakenly regarded as evil. Birds such as the parrot and raven were accorded veneration because, being able to mimic the human voice, they were looked upon as links between the human and the animal kingdoms.

“The dove, accepted by Christianity as the emblem of the Holy Ghost, is an extremely ancient and highly revered pagan yonic emblem. In many of the ancient mysteries it represented the third person of the Creative Triad, or the fabricator of the world. … It is sacred to Astarte, Cybele, Isis, Venus, Juno, Mylitta, and Aphrodite. On account of its gentleness and devotion to its young, the dove was looked upon as the embodiment of the maternal instinct. The dove is also a symbol of wisdom, for it represents the power and order by which the lower world is maintained. …

“In Masonry the dove is the symbol of purity and innocence. … Although Mohammed drove the doves from the temple at Mecca, occasionally he is depicted with a dove sitting upon his shoulder as the symbol of divine inspiration.” ~Manly P. Hall

Scavenger Birds

Scavengers are not evil. They are cleaners. It is sensible to think of flesh-eating bacteria as evil, for they eat healthy tissue. But you would not consider something that destroyed only cancer cells evil. For the san reason, scavengers, particularly scavenger birds, should not be considered evil. This is not to say that being a scavenger is a lot like being an angel. Scavengers serve a purpose, but that doesn’t make them holy. They are, in my opinion, neither evil nor good, but neutral.

Mr. Hall praises them as purifiers of the lower spheres, but I think that is an exaggeration of their capabilities. Getting rid of dead and decaying animals is cleansing of a sort, but I would not go so far as to call it purification. The only real purification of matter and the world of matter happens when it is transformed back into spirit. Nothing else is purification. Continue reading “Scavengers and Doves: Not Evil or Good”

sense of opposites

Sense of Opposites as Well as Oneness

A Sense of Opposites

“Western psychologists talk about the theory of empathy or transference of feeling or participation, but I am rather inclined to propound the doctrine of identity. Transference or participation is based upon the dualistic interpretation of reality whereas the identity goes more fundamentally into the root of existence where no dichotomy in any sense has yet taken place. … The idea of two is based on that of one. Two will never be understood without one. To visualize this, read the following from Traherne’s Centuries of Meditation:

‘You never enjoy the world aright, till the Sea itself floweth in your veins, till you are clothed with the heavens, and crowned with the stars; and perceive yourself to be the sole heir of the whole world, and none more than so, because men are in it who are everyone sole heirs as well as you. …’

“Such feelings as these can never be comprehended so long as the sense of opposites is dominating your consciousness. The idea of participation or empathy is an intellectual interpretation of the primary experience, while as far as the experience itself is concerned, there is no room for ant sort of dichotomy. The intellect, however, obtrudes itself in order to make it amenable to intellectual treatment, which means a discrimination or bifurcation. The original feeling of identity is then lost and intellect is allowed to have its characteristic way of breaking up reality into pieces.” ~ D. T. Suzuki

Duality or Not

Suzuki is obviously a believer in the philosophy of Oneness rather than duality. To him, and those like him, there is no hot and cold, no male and female, no dark and light. Everything is but a part of the one, and such distinctions they believe are unnecessary and probably invalid. But as Suzuki himself says in the above quote, the idea of two is based on the idea of one.

Where this philosophy fails, in my opinion, is in the idea that the pairs in a world of duality must be a dichotomy, with each being totally separate from the other. But it doesn’t have to be that way at all. The other problem with it is that it leaves no room for improvement. If there is no separation of light from dark, there is no possibility of making the world more full of light, and less full of darkness. If there is no separation of good from evil, one cannot rid themselves or the world of evil. Yet you would have to be a fool to think this is a perfect world that needs no improvement. So in order to make improvements, we must accept that on the physical level, the world is one of duality just as much as it is one of unity. Continue reading “Sense of Opposites as Well as Oneness”

seed of evil

Seed of Evil Will Be Uprooted

“As long as the seed of evil is hidden, wickedness is ineffectual, but it has not yet been removed from the midst of the seed of the holy spirit. Everyone is a slave of evil. But when the seed is revealed, the perfect light will flow out on everyone. And all those who are in the light will receive the chrism. Then the slaves will be free and the captives ransomed.

“Every plant that my heavenly father has not planted will be uprooted. Those who are separated will be joined and filled. Everyone who enters the bridal chamber will kindle the light, for it burns just as in marriages performed, though they happen at night. That fire burns only at night and is put out. Yet the mysteries of this marriage are perfected rather in the day and the light. Neither that day nor its light ever sets.

“If you become an attendant of the bridal chamber, you will receive the light. If you do not receive it while in those places, you cannot receive it in the other place. You who receive the light will not be seen nor detained. And no one will be able to torment you even while you live in the world. And when you leave the world you have already received the truth in the images. The world has become the eternal realm,90 because the eternal realm is fullness for you. This is the way it is. It is revealed to you alone, not hidden in the darkness and the night but in a perfect day and a holy light.” ~Gospel of Philip

Seed of Evil

The seed of evil could be the Devil or Demiurge, the creator of the realm of matter and illusion. It could also be said that the seed of evil is ignorance because when we truly know God and the Universe, we know that doing evil deeds always harms us more than others, even when it doesn’t seem so at the time. I don’t understand why the Gospel says that “ wickedness is ineffectual” when the seed is hidden. I think this line was probably mistranslated. The work of the Devil and the demons is most effective when they are hidden or when people do not believe in them. It is like being trapped in an invisible cage. You think you are free when you are completely being manipulated. At least those who believe in the seed of evil can question where dome ideas are coming from and refuse to act when they realize it is a demon.

Slaves of Evil

We are slaves of evil only because most of us do not even realize the evil one, the seed of evil, is manipulating us, individually or as groups. Even those who are aware are restricted in what they can do by the vast majority who are enslaved so, to a lesser degree, even they are slaves of evil. For example, you get hired to do a job. You know, as a somewhat awakened person, that what is important is that you do your job to best serve man and God. Your employer, however, is only concerned with maximizing profit, and directs you accordingly.

Plants not Planted

What could Philip mean by this? Does it mean that God only wants wild plants? Does that mean that planting gardens is wrong, part of the seed of evil? No, that’s no it, though I’m sure many would interpret it that way.

The plants not planted by God is everything that was not created by God. That means the entire physical universe which was created by the Demiurge. That is why the realm of matter is defective; full of death, disease, and destruction.

So the physical universe will be “uprooted”. That process is already underway. But it doesn’t mean the physical world will be destroyed, unless you look at it with the view of a materialist. The physical dimension will be gradually raised to higher and higher frequencies until it becomes spiritual, as it was before the Demiurge changed it. He didn’t truly create the physical realm but converted some of the spiritual dimensions into physical matter. We can be agents of the seed of evil and try to stop or delay that process, or we can be agents of God and help the process. The choice is ours.

Attendant of the Bridal Chamber

Gnostic and other spiritual literature often refers to this conversion of the realm of matter, as well as the awakening of the soul, as entering a bridal chamber. This does not mean it is related to sex. It means it is a rejoining with God. The seed of evil doesn’t want us to do that. We should anyway.

Becoming an attendant of the bridal chamber means that we are among those helping God in His Great Plan to reclaim the physical universe and bring it back into the fold. This is not something that will happen overnight, but the process will be faster and smoother if a large percent of us cooperate. That is why we should be attendants in that bridal chamber.

The light comes only to those who are attendants, who aid God and not the seed of evil. This is not ordinary light the quote refers to, but spiritual light. This spiritual light come to us through the spiritual sun and is the light that awakens and nourishes the soul. So naturally, that light is sent to those who aid God, but not those who side with the seed of evil.
