rulers of darkness

Rulers of Darkness and Their Realm

“Then when Sophia Zoe saw that the rulers of darkness cursed her companions, she was angry. And when she came out of the first heaven with every power, she chased the rulers from their heavens, and she cast them down to the sinful world, that they might dwell there as evil demons upon the earth. She sent the bird that was in paradise so that, until the consummation of the age, it might spend the thousand years in the rulers’ world: a vital living being with soul, called the phoenix, which kills itself and reanimates itself for a witness to their judgment, because they dealt unjustly with Adam and his race. There are three human beings and their descendants in the world until the consummation of the age: the spiritual and the psychical and the earthly. This is like the three kinds of phoenixes of paradise: the first is immortal; the second attains one thousand years; as for the third, it is written in the Holy Book that it is consumed. Likewise three baptisms exist: the first is spiritual, the second is by fire, the third is by water. Just as the phoenix appears as a witness for the angels, so too the water serpents82 in Egypt have become a witness to those who go down for the baptism of a true person.” ~On the Origin of the World

Rulers of Darkness

The Rulers of Darkness are the fallen angels who are also known collectively as the Demiurge. The Darkness that they rule is the universe of matter that they created on their own in violation of the Laws of God. Because it was created without God, it is defective, dark. Death, disease, the need to eat other beings to survive, these are all indicators of a realm of darkness, not light. Of course, there is some light here. It cannot be shut out completely, though the dark lords try. But in case you haven’t noticed, even on a mere material level light can also penetrate darkness and lessen it but darkness cannot penetrate into light. On the material level, darkness is just the absence of light, so it cannot exist where there is light. But on a spiritual level, darkness is just another name for ignorance of God and God’s Law. That is what makes it possible for people who are full of light to exist right next to those who are almost completely dark. But it is never possible for one to be full of light and darkness at the same time.

The First Heaven

Sophia came from the “first heaven”. As it is called the first heaven, we can assume it existed before all other heavens, or spiritual dimensions, at least if we think in linear time. A better way to put it is to say this is the highest heaven. It is the dimension that is also known as the Godhead. All other dimensions were generated from it. Shadow Called Darkness or The Demiurge

“The immeasurable light is everywhere within it. Outside it, however, is a shadow, and it was called darkness. From it appeared a power over the darkness. And the powers that came into being afterward called the shadow the limitless chaos. From it every kind of deity was brought forth, one after another, along with the whole place. Consequently, the shadow too is subsequent to what “derived from Pistis, whom we have mentioned. The shadow perceived that there was one stronger than it. It was jealous, and when it became self-impregnated, it immediately bore envy. Since that day the principle of envy has appeared in all of the aeons and their worlds. But envy was found to be an aborted fetus without any spirit in it. It became like the shadows in a great watery substance. Then the bitter wrath that came into being from the shadow was cast into a region of chaos. Since that day a watery substance has appeared. What was enclosed in the shadow flowed forth, appearing in chaos. Just as all the useless afterbirth of one who bears a little child falls, likewise the matter that came into being from the shadow was cast aside. Matter did not come out of chaos, but it was in chaos, existing in a part of it.

“Now, after these things happened, Pistis came and appeared over the matter of chaos, which was cast off like an aborted fetus, since there was no spirit in it. For all of that is a boundless darkness and water of unfathomable depth. And when Pistis saw what came into being from her deficiency, she was disturbed. And the disturbance appeared as something frightful, and it fled to her in the chaos. She turned to it and breathed into its face in the abyss, which is beneath all of the heavens. Now, when Pistis Sophia wanted to cause the thing that had no spirit to be formed into a likeness and rule over matter and over all its powers, a ruler first appeared out of the waters, lion like in appearance, androgynous, with great authority within himself but ignorant of whence he came into being.” ~On the Origin of the World

Immeasurable Light

The Immeasurable Light is the spiritual light that originates with God. It is eternal and everywhere in the spiritual universe. It is even found in the material universe, but to a lesser degree because spiritual light and matter are, in a sense, opposites. Matter repels spiritual light as much as it can. But thanks to the birth of the Sun of Righteousness which acts as a sort of doorway between the realms of matter and spirit, that light is now entering into matter more than ever before and slowly transforming the realm of matter back into spirit.

Shadow Called Darkness

From what I see on social media spiritual groups, many people don’t understand what it means when spiritual teachers talk about darkness being evil and light being good. They will immediately respond that light cannot exist without darkness, which is false on all levels, but especially on the spiritual level. But the darkness the spiritual teachers are talking about isn’t simply a matter of physical light being blocked as in an eclipse. The spiritual Light they speak of is the Light of God which is full of truth and knowledge about God, the spiritual universe, and all of reality. The darkness is the opposite of that, specifically, ignorance of God, truth, and reality. I don’t think anyone is so foolish as to claim that intelligence can’t exist without ignorance, likewise, light can exist without darkness. Some might argue that you can’t recognize Light without darkness for contrast. That is simply not the case. People who have near-death experiences often talk about seeing a bright light, so bright they can’t look at it directly. I have never heard one claim that this light is surrounded by absolute darkness for contrast. Only in the physical realm of duality must everything have an opposite. sun shines

Sun Shines to Dispel Darkness

“Shame on you because of the powers of your bodies, for they will mistreat you. “Shame on you because of the actions of the evil demons. “Shame on you who entice your limbs with fire. Who will sprinkle a restful dew on you, to extinguish the many fires within you, and your burning? Who will shine the sun on you, to dispel darkness in you, and hide darkness and filthy water? “The sun and the moon will give a fragrant aroma to you and the air, the spirit, the earth, and the water. If the sun does not shine upon these bodies, they will rot and perish just like weed or grass. If the sun shines on it, it grows strong and chokes the grapevine. But if the grapevine becomes strong and casts its shadow over the weeds and all the rest of the brush growing with it, and spreads and fills out, it alone inherits the land where it grows, and dominates wherever it has cast its shadow. So when it grows, it dominates the whole land, and it is productive for its master and pleases him greatly. He would have labored painfully to pull out weeds, but the grapevine by itself has disposed of them and choked them, and they have died and have become like earth.” Then Jesus continued and said to them, “Shame on you, for you have not accepted the teaching, and those who wish to accept it will suffer when they preach. You will persecute them, but you will rush into your own traps. You will cast them down to the lions and put them to death, daily, but they will rise from death.” ~The Book of Thomas

Powers of the Body

The powers of the body are not necessarily evil. But when you concentrate on using the powers of the body and don’t develop your spiritual powers, then they are. It’s somewhat like in Harry Potter when you drink Unicorn blood you will live “a half-life, a cursed life”. In this case, you are drinking from the tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, which is to say, the world of matter.

The realm of matter is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the complete universe. There are more spiritual dimensions than material ones, so to ignore them is to ignore seventy percent of reality. And matter is both temporary and an illusion in some ways, so it is even worse than only seeing thirty percent. It is as if you are given the choice of a stone statue or an ice sculpture and you choose the ice. You might like the looks of the ice sculpture better, but in a few hours, it will melt and be gone. So care for the body, feed it and exercise it, but go beyond the physical to experience reality.

Action of Demons

Why should the action of demons shame you? It is because too many of us are willing to listen to the demons and creatures of darkness and do their bidding, whether we are aware of it or not. Doing the work of the demons is another way of saying that you are materialistic. Demons and devils rule in the world of matter. Angels and Beings of Light rule in the spiritual dimensions. We do have to live out our lives in the world of matter, but we don’t have to embrace it as a loving friend. So the demons shame us by simply getting us to do their bidding.

Sun Shines

Thomas asks, “Who will shine the sun on you, to dispel the darkness in you?” The answer, of course, is God. God’s Spiritual Light that awakens the spirit and soul shines on us through the spirit of the sun (or Sun of Righteousness). But it is up to us to turn to that light and take it in. It is also up to us to have the right attitude when we do so. The Light of the Spiritual Sun will awaken our spiritual faculties only if we send it positive and benevolent thoughts. It is, in a sense, an exchange of energy rather than just taking energy on our part. We are intended to be participants in the universe, not just pieces of driftwood going with the flow and having no goals.

Weeds and Grapevines

The section about weeds and grapevines seems a little confused. Let’s try to sort out the allegory of it.

If the sun shines mostly on the weeds, it means that the material sun is dominant and the servants of demons and matter, the weeds, will be strong and control the world. We are definitely seeing that in the world today and in recent centuries.

If the sun shines primarily on the grapevines, it means that the spiritual sun is dominant and the servants of God and Truth, represented by grapevines, will be a dominant force in the world. Such a world has existed in the past, and it can once more. Some of the great spiritual leaders say we are now at the dawn of a new Spiritual Age or Golden Age which will allow the spiritual to rule. It may not seem that way, but we must remember that it is always darkest and coldest just before the dawn. And this new age isn’t just coming to planet Earth. The entire physical universe is being slowly transformed. A lot of what is being called global warming is really the entire universe changing. We can embrace the change and become part of it, or we can fight the change and die along with the realm of matter. When the sun shines on our spirits and souls, they gain eternal life.

One added point about sunlight for those concerned about covid-19. When the sun shines on us it emits radiation that can help kill any virus in us or on us. It also helps strengthen our immune system. So don’t hide from sunlight if you want good health. The idea that we should have weak, pasty, ghost skin that never sees sunlight is total nonsense.

proud man

Proud Man of Darkness

“He that toucheth pitch shall be defiled therewith; and he that hath fellowship with a proud man shall be like unto him. Burden not thyself above thy power while thou livest; and have no fellowship with one that is mightier and richer than thyself: for how agree the kettle and the earthen pot together? for if the one be smitten against the other, it shall be broken. The rich man hath done wrong, and yet he threateneth withal: the poor is wronged, and he must intreat also. If thou be for his profit, he will use thee: but if thou have nothing, he will forsake thee. If thou have any thing, he will live with thee: yea, he will make thee bare, and will not be sorry for it. If he have need of thee, he will deceive thee, and smile upon thee, and put thee in hope; he will speak thee fair, and say, What wantest thou? And he will shame thee by his meats, until he have drawn thee dry twice or thrice, and at the last he will laugh thee to scorn afterward, when he seeth thee, he will forsake thee, and shake his head at thee. Beware that thou be not deceived and brought down in thy jollity. If thou be invited of a mighty man, withdraw thyself, and so much the more will he invite thee. Press thou not upon him, lest thou be put back; stand not far off, lest thou be forgotten. Affect not to be made equal unto him in talk, and believe not his many words: for with much communication will he tempt thee, and smiling upon thee will get out thy secrets: But cruelly he will lay up thy words, and will not spare to do thee hurt, and to put thee in prison. Observe, and take good heed, for thou walkest in peril of thy overthrowing: when thou hearest these things, awake in thy sleep. Love the Lord all thy life, and call upon him for thy salvation. Every beast loveth his like, and every man loveth his neighbor. All flesh consorteth according to kind, and a man will cleave to his like. What fellowship hath the wolf with the lamb? so the sinner with the godly. What agreement is there between the hyena and a dog? and what peace between the rich and the poor? As the wild ass is the lion’s prey in the wilderness: so the rich eat up the poor.” ~Ecclesiasticus

Pitch and a Proud Man

While touching pitch (tar) will make your hands black, I think we can assume that Ecclesiasticus is using it figuratively. He is saying those who play around with the things of darkness are almost certain to have some of it rub off on them. I think we can understand today that this would be like walking into a coronavirus ward with no gloves or face mask. It would be foolishly inviting the virus to harm us. And while there is some truth in the idea that believing you are protected because you are spiritual, pray a lot, or accept Jesus, actually does protect you to some degree, it rarely protects you enough. So walking into a place full of dark beings, demons, or simply evil men and women is not a wise thing to do. It isn’t wise even for the more advanced spiritual person, but especially for the beginner. Someday, the army of the awakened will be strong enough to do it collectively, but not individually.

A proud, greedy, or otherwise evil man is much like a demon or the forces of darkness. Perhaps not to the same degree, but still not good. So to think you can fix the world by going after that type to convert them first is foolhardy. Go for those who are beginning to awaken, not those who are as far from it as a human being can get.
