Spirit Directs Us to Enlightenment

“Zarathustra knew that Spirit directs the course of human evolution. … He had worked in the etheric body since the entrance of the Luciferic nature. It was therefore necessary that a man should appear who had transformed the astral body to the same level that it would have reached in the middle of the Atlantean evolution, had there been no Luciferian influence. Had Lucifer not appeared, mankind would certainly have attained this level before, but without personal independence or the possibility of freedom. Now, however, in spite of those qualities he should again arise to this height. Zarathustra, endowed with prophetic vision, could see that in the future it would be possible, within human evolution, for a personality to exist, who would have a suitable astral body for that purpose. But he also knew that the great Sun-spirit could not appear on earth before that time, though he could be perceived by a seer in the spiritual part of the Sun. When as a seer he turned his attention to the Sun, Zarathustra was able to see this Spirit, whom he proclaimed to his people. He announced that the Sun-spirit was at first to be found only in the spiritual world, but that later He would descend to earth. This was the great Sun-spirit, or Spirit of Light (the Aura of the Sun, Ahura-mazdao, or Ormuzd).” ~Rudolf Steiner

Spirit Directs

Overall, spirit does direct the course of human evolution. When we look at it individually, we may find that it isn’t. That is because few individuals have awakened their spiritual faculties so they are controlled entirely by the physical and mental faculties. That results in devolution to lower, more material forms instead of higher, more spiritual forms. But even though only a small percentage of humanity have awakened their spirits and souls, it is enough to cause the course of evolution to shift towards the spiritual.

Etheric Body

What Steiner is calling the etheric body, most of us today would call the spirit body, or simply the spirit. Zoroaster, who Steiner calls Zarathustra, did work on his etheric body, as does anyone truly interested in spiritual growth. The awakened spirit directs us to do so. The unawakened sometimes need hints from outside sources to get them to start dealing with their spiritual self. Concupiscence and Grace

“We have often found among the brethren that they have found such gladness and grace that for five or six years, they say, concupiscence had withdrawn away, and after this, when they supposes that they were free from it, the evil, which has been concealed, set upon them, and they were all on fire with concupiscence, so that they were surprised, and said, ‘After a long time, whence did this evil rise against us?’ No man of sound mind dares to say, ‘While grace is with me, I am completely free from sin.’ Both the two characters are at work upon the mind. People of no experience in these matters, when grace has had some little effect upon them, imagine that they have already conquered, and are perfect Christians. For my part, I say that the fact is this; –When the sun is in the sky, shining in a clear air, and clouds come about him and cover him, and make the air thick, and yet the sun, far within, is not robbed either of his light or of his proper being, so it is with those who are not completely cleansed. Being in the Grace of God, and yet held by sin beneath the surface, they have the natural motions and the actual thoughts strong towards God, and yet are not entirely belonging to good.” ~St. Macarius the Egyptian

Grace and Concupiscence

St. Macarius says concupiscence has drawn away from those living in God’s grace. It is not clear to me if he means concupiscence as a strong sexual desire or all strong desires. In either case, it is true that the spiritually awakened, which is another way of saying living in God’s grace, generally do not have strong desires for earthly or material things, including sex. That doesn’t mean spiritual people don’t have sexual desires and don’t have sex. It means they have more control over such desires than those who surrender to materialistic and animalistic ways.

Free from Evil

Whether it is concupiscence in the form of sexual desires or some other form of sin, we are not entirely free of this simply because we have had a “spiritual awakening”. For starters, there are many ideas of what a spiritual awakening consists of.

Some think that merely becoming aware that there is more to life and the universe than the fallen realm of matter. Clearly, that alone would not end concupiscence. Others get int Kundalini and think that once they have the kundalini energy moving through them, they are awake. That is not necessarily true, so that alone will not keep them free from sin. They can still be led astray by demons or mere evil or ignorant people.

Another group that includes those of us in the Cosolargy spiritual school think that awakening means bringing the dormant spiritual faculties—the spirit and soul—into full function and consciousness. This is a more complex process than either of the other two and generally happens gradually over a long period of time (think decades). If they are in that awakening process but haven’t completed it, they can still be led astray. Those who are fully awakened—and they are quite rare—are less easily influenced by the dark forces, but it can happen. What’s worse is the demons work their hardest at turning such people back toward the darkness of materialism. They are attracted to such people by their light, and yet want that light to go out. Winged Souls Awakened to Heavenly Truth

“When you stand still from the thinking of SELF and the will of SELF; when both thy intellect and Will are quiet and passive to the impressions of the Eternal Word and Spirit; when the Soul is winged up, and above that which is temporal with the outward senses and the imagination being locked up by Holy Abstraction; then the Eternal Hearing, Seeing, and Speaking will be revealed in Thee; and so God hears and sees through thee, being now an organ of His Spirit; and so God speaks in thee, and whispers to thy Spirit, and thy Spirit hears His voice. Blessed art thou therefore of thou can stand still from SELF-Thinking and SELF-Willing, and can stop the wheel of thy imagination and senses; for it is hereby that thou may arrive at length to see the great Salvation of God, being made capable of all Manner of Divine Sensations and Heavenly Communications. Since it is nothing but your own hearing and willing that hinders thee, so thou does not see and hear God.” ~Jacob Boehme

Stand Still from Thinking

This is a common teaching in spiritual and mystery schools. Whether the primary method of awakening is by meditation or spiritual sun-gazing, it is well known that communication with higher beings only happens when the mind is still. But knowing that isn’t enough, you have to know how to still the mind. Zen methods such as thinking of the sound of one hand clapping can help. You could also try counting and slowing down as you count, like this: “1-2-3-4—5—6–7–8—9—10—11”. The idea is to create gaps in thinking through which Divine Revelation can enter. Even these methods, however, are still thinking. The best way is to ask God to help you still your mind and be patient for it to happen. It won’t happen on the first attempt, or the second, but it will eventually.

SELF and Will of SELF

I don’t know why Boehme chose to capitalize SELF like that, but he did (or at least the translator did, which probably means Boehme did). I don’t think Boehme means thinking about yourself when he says this, however. I think that he is saying that we must quiet the thinking of our own mind and ego—that which we think of as ourself. In that way, the spirit and soul can function better. Of course, that can only happen if you have awakened the spirit and soul using the light of the Spiritual Sun. The awakened soul can communicate with God and Angels readily, but has difficulty sharing that knowledge with the mind. If your mind is constantly active, that makes it even harder. For that reason, sometimes the soul can communicate with the mind only through dreams.

Winged Souls

I have not heard anyone refer to the awakened souls as winged souls before, yet it seems a good metaphor to me. Of course, just as with the wings of Angels, it should not be taken literally. Angels do not have bird wings sticking out of their backs, they have wings of light. Likewise, the soul would have no use for actual wings, but it can use the spiritual light that can appear somewhat like wings at times. It is still more of a metaphor to say that the awakened soul can sour to great heights, to higher levels of consciousness, to higher dimensions where Angels and Light Beings dwell. It also symbolizes the newfound freedom of the soul and the self after the spirit and soul have been truly awakened.

God Speaks

Yes, God does speak in us, to us, through us. But only awakened souls, winged souls, actually listen. Only the awakened are attuned to the necessary frequencies to communicate with God or His Angels. Many today believe in God, but don’t believe He speaks to us anymore. They think the only communication that comes from God is to be found in holy books that are two, three, or four thousand years old. They are wrong for two reasons. First, what God said several thousand years ago is often no longer applicable to the current times and conditions. Second, what is in those books is often not exactly what God said, but the interpretation of certain men of what he said. In some cases, it is simply the opinion of men on what God would say if the question were asked of Him, but they have not actually got that answer from God. But the important thing is that reliance on these writings to tell us what God wants is to act as if God is dead and can no longer communicate with Man. God is not dead and still communicates with awakened souls. The problem is that for centuries, as man became more and more materialistic, he was discouraged from awakening and using his spiritual faculties. Now, despite the fact that many have become so densely material they no longer believe in anything spiritual, others are starting to awaken their spiritual Self again and communicating with the beings at higher levels of consciousness, including God Himself. These winged souls are beginning to change the world for the better. These winged souls will be the leaders in the coming Golden Age of Light.

Righteous Man Wears the Crown of Light

“Then shall the righteous man stand in great boldness before the face of such as have afflicted him, and made no account of his labors. When they see it, they shall be troubled with terrible fear, and shall be amazed at the strangeness of his salvation, so far beyond all that they looked for. And they repenting and groaning for anguish of spirit shall say within themselves, This was he, whom we had sometimes in derision, and a proverb of reproach: We fools accounted his life madness, and his end to be without honor: How is he numbered among the children of God, and his lot is among the saints! … What hath pride profited us? or what good hath riches with our vaunting brought us? All those things are passed away like a shadow, and as a post that hasted by. … Even so we in like manner, as soon as we were born, began to draw to our end, and had no sign of virtue to shew; but were consumed in our own wickedness. For the hope of the ungodly is like dust that is blown away with the wind; … like as the smoke which is dispersed here and there with a tempest, and passeth away as the remembrance of a guest that tarrieth but a day. Righteous Man

There are many different ideas of what a righteous person is. Most would say that it is someone who faithfully follows the rules of the church they belong to. But in the Book of Wisdom, it is a more universal and accurate thing. In this quote, it means one who faithfully follows the Way of God and the Laws of God, even when it is not popular to do so. That means following the actual Law of God, not some minister’s opinion of it.

Troubled with Fear

Why should others be troubled when they see that a righteous man has awakened and achieved salvation? Because it shows that their idea of the path to salvation is a false one. It shows that there is a true Way of God and variations created by man do not lead to real salvation.

Another reason might be that some people, specifically false priests, and government officials, don’t want people to have a true spiritual awakening. They like people to remain like sheep who can be easily manipulated, easily controlled. This is why false paths based on fear are often promoted by those authorities.
