Random Thoughts 8-3-2014

Because I am traveling, I am writing some articles weeks in advance, so I can’t comment on this weeks news stories like I usually do. Instead, this week’s random thoughts will concentrate on some favorite spiritual quotes.

Everything here, but the soul of man, is a passing shadow. The only enduring substance is within.” ~W. E. Channing

Only the spirit and the soul is eternal, only they can be saved.

Our real duty is always found running in the direction of our worthiest desires” ~Randolph S. Bourne

The worthiest desires are, of course, the spiritual desires.

It is better to be motivated by the soul’s hunger rather than the ego’s greed.” ~Unknown

To be what we are, and to become what we are capable of becoming, is the only end in life.” ~Robert Louis Stevenson

And that means becoming more than what we are in the material world, not less.

Reflect upon you present blessings, of which every man has many not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some.” ~Charles Dickens

We shouldn’t ignore the negative things in the world, but neither should we constantly dwell on them. That only leads to stress and depression.

Non-attachment is like a fire that can burn the binding power of past samskaras. Non-attachment and love are one ant the same. Non-attachment gives freedom, but attachment brings bondage.” ~Swami Rama

Trying to develop spiritually while clinging to the material world is like trying to row a boat that is still tied to the dock.

Random Thoughts 7-27-2014

I usually write my Random Thoughts on Saturday morning, but because I won’t be able to this week, I am writing it on Friday.

Recent discoveries indicate that many dinosaurs actually had feathers. Big Bird lives!

Three air disasters in a week! Many are now wondering if flying is safe. What you need to remember is that just as the odds of winning the jackpot on a slot machine may be one in fifty thousand, it may happen that it is won three times in one day. That doesn’t change the odds of winning and the three air disasters don’t change the generally very good safety record for flying. Of course, you could say that you only have to be in the one in a million that crashes to get killed, but still, it isn’t something to be overly worried about.

By the way, am I the only one who never heard of the African country Burkina Faso until this week?

For once I have to agree with Gov. Cristie. He said in a speech this week that if you claim to be pro-life, that claim should not end when the child is born. I totally agree. Many of those pro-lifers are opposed to giving aid to poor children, to providing health care for those who can’t afford the high cost of medical care in this country, and helping the homeless find jobs and shelter. If that is your attitude, you are NOT pro-life, you are pro-birth which is not the same thing.

This weeks nasty pit bull story: animal control officers in Georgia spotted a pit bull carrying a chihuahua with a badly infected eye. Periodically she would put her friend down and lick the eye (dog saliva is antibiotic). The vet had to remove the badly damaged eye, but at least the infection is over and the two dogs are close friends. The shelter ais hoping to find someone who will adopt them together.

because we have heard and because faith tells us so, we know we have souls. But we seldom consider the precious things that can be found in this soul, or who dwells within it, or its highest value” ~St. Teresa of Avila

The Soul and Immortality

We have shown elsewhere that the ‘secret doctrine’ does not concede immortality to all men alike. ‘The eye would never see the sun, if it were not of the nature of the sun,’ said Plotinus. Only ‘through the highest purity and chastity we shall approach nearer to God, and receive in the contemplation of Him, the true knowledge and insight, writes porphyry. If the human soul has neglected during its life-time to receive it’s illumination from the Divine Spirit, our personal God, then it becomes difficult for the gross and sensual man to survive for a great length of time his physical death. No more than the misshapen monster can live long after its physical birth, can the soul, once that it has become too material, exist after its birth into the spiritual world.” ~H. P. Blavatsky

It seems that the vast majority of people fall into one of three schools when it comes to the soul and immortality: (1) either they believe that the soul and spirit does not exist at all and therefore immortality is impossible or, (2) they believe that all people are born with an immortal soul and spirit and no matter what they do in their material life they cannot change that fact and therefore they are immortal always, or (3) they believe in an immortal soul and spirit, but that does not make them immortal unless they do certain things in their lives. To Grow We Must Share

If you have ever gotten seriously into physical fitness and worked out at a gym or health club, you probably were told at some time by a fitness instructor that you can’t just work on one area of the body if you want to get the best results. You can’t just do arm exercises because you want big arms and ignore the rest of the body. You can’t just work on your chest and ignore your arms. You can’t just do upper body exercises and ignore the legs. The reason is not only that you will get an unbalanced physique, but also because you can only grow one set of muscles to a certain point and then they will not grow more if the other muscles around them are not getting a workout as well. You have to grow them all together.
In developing spiritually, the same is true on two levels. On the personal level, we have to strengthen all of our energy centers and keep them in balance (contrary to some schools that teach members to develop only the upper, more spiritual centers while ignoring the lower, more material ones). Beyond the personal level, out spiritual development is often limited by the other people around us, and indeed, all the people in the world. If we are around people with low frequency vibrations, or very negative vibrations and thoughts, that limits out ability to reach higher frequencies. That is why is is good to do our spiritual practices as part of a group or, when working with a group is not possible, go off somewhere where we can be alone. We also need to help other grow spiritually since the vibration level of the whole planet limits out level as well. In short, you must share what Light you get in order to get enough to achieve enlightenment.
