First Thought that Created Reality

“I am first thought, the thought that is in light. I am movement that is in all, she in whom the realm of all takes its stand, the firstborn among those who came into being, she who exists before all. She is called by three names, although she exists alone, since she is perfect. I am invisible within the thought of the invisible one. I am revealed in the immeasurable, ineffable things. I am intangible, dwelling in the intangible. I move in every creature. I am the life of my afterthought that is within every power and every eternal movement, and in invisible lights, and within the powers and angels and demons and every soul in Tartaros, and in every material soul. I live in those who came into being. I move in everyone and I enter them. I walk upright, and those who sleep I awaken. And I am the sight of those who dwell in sleep. I am the invisible one in all. I counsel those who are hidden, since I know the whole realm of all that exists in it. I am numberless beyond everyone. I am immeasurable, ineffable, yet whenever I wish, I shall reveal myself. I am the head of all. I am before all, and I am all, since I am in everyone. I am a voice speaking softly. I am from the beginning. I am in the silence that surrounds every one of them. And the hidden voice is in me, in intangible, immeasurable thought, in the immeasurable silence.” ~Three Forms of First Thought

First Thought

The First Thought is not just in the light, it is Light. The first thought is the beginning of creation. Although that is not exactly true. Because of the limits of human language and understanding, we talk in terms of a first thought and a first being, but can there really be such things in a realm outside of the limitations of time and space? Still, it does aid our understanding to speak in such terms, even if they are not accurate. We can’t ignore the spiritual realms simply because we cannot really understand them on a mental level. Studying them can help us awaken our spiritual faculties which do understand the spiritual and the infinite. The human soul can understand because it is a spirit, it exists outside of time and space.

Movement in All

The First Thought is, of course, also the First Movement. How could it be otherwise? The first thought must move, must do something, or it wouldn’t exist. Thought is creation and the movement is creation in action. Many people have forgotten, or perhaps never knew, that thought is energy and energy does work. So thought must move, must do work, must create. That is its nature.

The Firstborn

This particular Gnostic tract refers to this firstborn as “she”. This may upset some people who insist that God and Christ are male. But sexual terms like he and she have no meaning on a spiritual level. Spirits are not male or female, yet they are both. If you can’t grasp that, you are thinking in terms of matter. You need to stop thinking that matter rules the universe, and the laws of matter are the laws of the universe. Matter is an aberration, not an advancement. It is a disease that needs to be cured. So its limitations like male and female don’t exist in the higher dimensions of spirit.

Whether you wish to call the Firstborn “she” or “he” really doesn’t matter. It is Christ. It is the first creation of God and the creative force of God. Don’t think a child in the sense of offspring. While that may be true in a sense, Christ is not a miniature of God, but an aspect of God. The first creation must be the power of creation, and that is Christ, the Firstborn. sun beings

Sun Beings and Solar Influence

“The higher beings who were previously in the Earth-planet itself, now influence it from the sun. On this account all effects produced on the earth are changed. The human being chained to earth would no longer be able to feel the influence of the sun beings within him, if his soul were increasingly turned toward the earth, from which his physical body is taken. A change now appears in the condition of human consciousness. At certain times the sun beings rest the soul of man from his physical body, so that man is now alternately purely psychic, in the bosom of the sun-beings, and, when united with the body, heat currents stream up to him; a sea of air is sounding around him and the water pours into and out of him. When man is out of his body the images of the higher beings in whose care he is, float through his soul.

“The earth passes through two periods at this stage of its evolution. During one of these it allows its substances to circulate around the human souls and clothes them with bodies.” ~Rudolf Steiner

Higher Beings

Most humans seem to fall into two categories when it comes to belief in higher beings. Some think that many planets have physical life forms and many of them are far more intelligent than we are. The other group cannot accept that any being can possibly be any greater than they are. They are both partially wrong and partially right.

As for the second group, it is true that in many decades of looking we have found no hard evidence of higher beings on other planets, or anywhere else. But that may be because the scientists don’t understand that these higher beings are so different that they are not recognized as life at all.

While the first group is correct in believing that higher life forms exist, neither they nor anyone else has any evidence of such beings having material bodies and living on other material planets. They believe it only based on a simple statistic, namely that with so many planets if one has intelligent life, others must also. But maybe humanity is a rarity and physical life on other planets is limited to plants and primitive animals.

There are higher life forms, but they exist at higher frequencies, in higher dimensions. In other words, the higher beings are spiritual, not physical. Some such beings live in the sun. These sun beings are not burned up by the heat or radiation because they have no physical bodies. These sun beings sometimes interact with us earthbound humans. They may be called muses or spirit guides. The title doesn’t matter. They are beings of a higher state of consciousness and spiritual realization so it is their honor and duty to help us achieve the same.

Influence from the Sun

We are indeed receiving a great deal of influence from the sun, and in several different ways. The physical sun obviously affects us in many ways. The pull of its gravity controls the orbit of Earth. Its radiation gives us heat and light. But there are other effects, more subtle and on different levels.

One major way the sun affects us on earth is to act as a kind of mirror of our thoughts and emotions. The thoughts and feelings of all of humanity bombard the sun continuously. They are amplified by the sun and reflected back to us. So if our thoughts and full of violence and anger, the reflection from the sun will cause storms, earthquakes, droughts, and floods. If the thoughts are kind and friendly, the reflection from the sun will bring us good years and excellent crops.

But Mr. Steiner is referring to another way the sun can influence us, and that is by the influence of the sun beings. These beings that dwell in the sun can influence us for good or evil, depending on which group is doing the influencing. One group is on the side of darkness, materialism. They encourage us to accumulate material things and they accept physical reality as the only reality. The other group is more spiritual and they encourage us to let go of materialism and greed and develop our spiritual faculties. We can’t help but be influenced by both groups, but we can control to some degree who we listen to the most. It’s like people who say they would like to go to a gym and workout, but they don’t have the time. Actually, we have the time to do whatever we want to do bad enough. We simply push other things aside to make time. In a similar manner, if we listen to an follow the evil sun beings often, their influence on us will grow until it becomes unstoppable. But if we ignore them most of the time and listen instead to the good sun beings, we will find ourselves attuning to them more and blocking out the others.

Then there is the influence of the spiritual sun, which is an actual being on its own. You can think of it as the big brother of Earth’s spirit. When we treat the earth poorly, on a physical or spiritual level, we anger her big brother. You don’t want the sun to be angry with you. But if we start improving our relationship with mother Earth, her big brother and the sun beings within it will smile down on us.

Sun Beings in our Soul

Steiner says the sun beings float through our souls when we are out of our bodies. This does not mean that we must have out-of-body adventures in order to be in contact with sun beings. They can influence our souls even while we are still in our physical bodies. But we have to attune ourselves mentally to the higher frequencies in which such beings dwell. Higher frequencies, not lower.

Can sun beings literally float through our souls? Yes, they can. They are spirits and our souls are spirits. They exist outside the limits and restrictions of time and space. But just because they can, doesn’t mean the will. It doesn’t seem to me like there would be any point to a sun being literally floating through our souls. I think Steiner means this figuratively rather than literally. He means that these sun beings send light and energy into our souls. Light and energy are full of information. Not random information like the internet, but meaningful information. They fill us with the light of truth. They caress us with the wisdom of the ages. We can choose to accept it or block it. But they don’t waste much time on those who won’t listen. If you keep blocking them, they will eventually stop floating through your soul.

inner principle

Inner Principle of Scripture and Man

“So long as we only see the Logos of God as embodied multiriously in symbols in the letter of Holy Scripture, we have not yet achieved spiritual insight into the incorporeal, simple, single and unique Father as he exists in the incorporeal, simple, single and unique Son, according to the saying, ‘He who has seen me has seen the Father …’. We need much knowledge so that, having first penetrated the veils of the sayings which cover the Logos, we may with a naked intellect see—in so far as men can—the pure Logos, as He exists in Himself, clearly showing us the Father in Himself. Hence a person who seeks God with true devotion should not be dominated by the literal text, lest he unwillingly receives not God but things appertaining to God, that is, lest he feel a dangerous affection for the words of scripture instead of for the Logos. …

“It is by means of the more lofty conceptual images that the inner principle of Holy Scripture can be stripped gradually of the complex garment of words with which it is physically draped. Then to the visionary intellect … it reveals itself as through the sound of a delicate breeze.” ~St. Nikodimos

Only Letters

St. Nikodomos, writing in the Philokalia, is telling us that trying to truly understand scripture by a literal interpretation of the words and symbols found there is not going to awaken our spiritual self. And it doesn’t matter what scripture you are looking at. The Bible, the Upanishads, the Koran, etc. all have hidden meanings, all are full of allegory. To try to understand them with literal interpretations produces an understanding that is not only false and incomplete but is often nearly the opposite of the true meaning.

What is really sad is that so many young people today, particularly the “Spiritual but not religious (SBNR)” crowd, reject all scripture outright because they recognize that a literal interpretation produces nonsense. It seems beyond their abilities to understand that these holy books were never intended to be literal. Of course, it is also true that many of these people have never actually read scripture, or have read only the scripture of one religion. They simply take the word of someone else that they are meaningless and irrelevant to those seeking spiritual enlightenment. In actual fact, there is much useful information in all of the world’s holy books, if you can understand the allegory used.

He Who Sees Me

There is a general misunderstanding of what Jesus meant when he said that if you see Him, you see the Father. Most interpret this as Jesus saying that He is God, therefore seeing Him, in the physical sense, is the same as looking at the Father. That is not what was meant. For one thing, God doesn’t even have a physical body.

What is meant is that those who have had a spiritual awakening and can “see” Jesus (and others) through the spiritual eyes of the soul are also seeing the Father. That is because when you see a person as a spirit—truly see it, not just believe it—you see that all spirits are the same and all spirits come from God. So if you know spirits, you know God. Individual souls are like bricks in the universal wall that is God. Or perhaps it might be better to say that individual spirits and souls are the flowers in the universal garden that is God.

Inner Principle of Holy Scripture

St. Nikodimos says that the “inner principle,” the true meaning of scripture is found by stripping off the complex garment of words. That may be part of it, but it isn’t enough. We not only need to look beyond the literal meaning of the words, but we also need to understand the spiritual meanings and symbols represented by the words.

Here is just one example. In the original Aramaic, Hebrew or Greek of the Bible, there are statements that seem to be constructed oddly or seem to have little meaning. But some of these were meant to be said out loud, perhaps repeatedly, much like a mantra in meditation. It was the combination of sounds produced that helped to awaken something in the listener, not the literal meaning of the words. Then when academics translate the words into other languages such as English and do it based on a literal meaning of the words, the sounds that were the true meaning, the inner principle, is lost.

Then there is the symbolic meaning. Symbols are often used in scripture. This is partly done to hide the true meaning from the unworthy, and partly to make it easier for people to remember the lesson being taught. Talking about evil forces opposing the good ones is vague, it doesn’t produce a mental image easily. But change it to a dragon fighting with a saint and you have produced a mental image that is easy to remember. References to things like flying carpets, pillars of fire, burning bushes, and water turned to wine sound like fantasy tales, but they are not. Others interpret such things as evidence of alien visitors. That is not true either. What those things are is symbols. Symbols of something spiritual. You can start to understand many of these symbols by getting a good dream dictionary. The meaning of dream symbols often coincides with the meaning of the allegorical symbols found in scripture. Learning to understand the inner principle of scripture is an important step in spiritual growth. Learning to understand the inner principle of ourselves is even more so.

musical sensibility

Musical Sensibility for Spiritual Inspiration

“One needs to sing with inspiration. By singing beautifully, one also perceives beautiful thoughts and feelings. When you listen to talented singers and musicians, you make a connection with advanced Beings who manifest themselves through them. The vibrations of these beings penetrate far into space through the voices of these singers and are uplifting to human souls. Few are the songs that are carried through space. Seldom is when an ancient Egyptian song can be received. A song or musical piece that doesn’t remain in space is not true music.

“The subconsciousness, the consciousness, the ego consciousness, and the Higher consciousness should all participate in the singing. Those who want to sing well need to be calm within. If you sustain negative thoughts and feelings within yourselves, you cannot sing or play an instrument. Technically, you can play and sing, but not with your soul.

“Wisdom makes use of music. From now on the world of music belongs to Wisdom. Performance, which is the external aspect of music, cannot be manifested without Wisdom.

“Music is a great art. … Sublime beings apply music readily, whereas it is much harder for ordinary people to apply music. … The more advanced a person’s musical sensibility, the more stable his character.” ~Biensa Douno

Sing with Inspiration

Part of musical sensibility is to sing with inspiration. Of course, all musicians and composers will probably say that they are always inspired. In a way, that might be true, but not in the sense Douno means.

A musician can see a person running to catch a bus and be inspired by that vision to write a song. A popular singer can break up with her latest boyfriend and be inspired to write about it. But that is not the type of inspiration needed.

Douno is talking about music that is Divinely Inspired. This can happen in one of three ways. First, the musician or composer can be an awakened soul and inspired through their own spiritual knowledge. That is the best way to be inspired. A musician might also be inspired through a spiritual being putting ideas in their head, the classic “muse” method. Or third, another person who is divinely Inspired might give an idea to the musician to use. All of these methods are good, but as already noted, being divinely inspired by your own spiritual experiences is best. Continue reading “Musical Sensibility for Spiritual Inspiration”
