“Time is only an illusion produced by the succession of our states of consciousness as we travel through eternal duration, and it does not exist where no consciousness exists in which the illusion can be produced; but ‘lies asleep.’ The present is only a mathematical line which divides that part of eternal duration which we call the future, from that part which we call the past. Nothing on earth has real duration, for nothing remains without change—or the same—for the billionth part of a second. …
“The real person or thing does not consist solely of what is seen at any particular moment, but is composed of the sum of all its various and changing conditions.” ~H. P. Blavatsky

Time Illusion

That time, as we think of it, is an illusion has been covered before on this blog. But I have some new information to add to the discussion.

First is how to define that moment of time which we call “the present”. Like Blavatsky, I have previously said that we can break time up into billionths of a second, so the present must be shorter than that. In actual fact, science has now defined a duration for the present, and that duration is three seconds. They come to that conclusion because they found that what happens around us in a period of about three seconds is all put together to form one image, one idea. It is that image created in the brain that we call the present. And by the time the brain has assembles that moment for us, the actual world has already moved on, continuing to change forever. But then Madame Blavatsky moves on to talk about what this means in defining object, animals, and people.

Timeless Man

When we see an object for the first time, we see it as it exists now, in what we call the present. Yet that object has a past and a future. The past and future of the object is as much a part of what it is as the present.

With those things we consider living, we think about them beyond the present to a greater degree, but not much greater. We look at a tulip bulb, and see its future as a mature tulip in our garden. We are looking at its future, even if it is just assumption on our part. When we see a dog that is afraid to get close to people, we see it being abused in the past, even though we weren’t there. Again, is is assumption, but we are recognizing that the dog is as much its past as it is its present.

We humans are just as timeless as the rocks and animals. Our present is not what we are. We are past, present, and future. We do understand that to some degree, but not enough. the woman who was sexually abused as a child, fears men in the present. That we can understand.  We do understand that the kid who doesn’t study in school has a future making donuts or cheeseburgers. At least, that is his probable future.

Beyond Timeless Man

But what if a week from now, that kid who doesn’t study has a spiritual awakening and becomes a great spiritual leader? We are not really seeing the person future, just predicting what is statistically likely. Occasionally, those statistics will be wrong. Few of us can truly see into the future and know that person’s destiny. Since we can’t, shouldn’t we give them the benefit of the doubt?

Now lets go back to the dog. Almost any person can guess at the dogs past and see that he was probably abused. The spiritually advanced person can go even further.

Beyond One Lifetime

There is a tale I once heard of a spiritual teacher who started to weep when a stray dog came up to him one day. His students asked why he was sad. He replied that he recognized in the eyes of the stray dog an old friend that had died a few years earlier. In other words, he say in the dog it’s previous life as a human.

Many people believe that it is just the other way around, but most spiritual leaders agree with this teacher. They say that people who have not developed their spiritual faculties while alive, will see their energy centers return in the form of an animal. If they do not fully develop and integrate their spiritual self with the mental now, they will not get the chance to do it after they die. Instead, the soul will return to Heaven by itself, and the “self” in the form of the energy centers will become an animal.

That is really seeing into the past. And theoretically, the future should be as easy to see as the past for timeless man, but we have little evidence of that so far. So if you want to be a truly timeless man (or woman), awaken your spiritual self now and develop it.
