“When the man of God has conquered almost all the passions, there remain two demons that still fight against him. The first troubles the soul by diverting it from its great love of God into a misplaced zeal, so that it does not want any other soul to be as pleasing to God as itself. The second demon inflames the body with sexual lust. This happens to the body in the first place because sexual pleasure with a view to procreation is something natural … We should fight the first of these demons by means of great humility and love, and the second by means of self-control, freedom from anger, and intense meditation on death, until we come to perceive unceasingly the energy of the Holy Spirit within us.” ~The Philokalia

Lord of DarknessYou might think that once you have awakened your soul and are well along on the path of enlightenment that you wouldn’t have to worry about attacks from demons and devils. Nothing could be further from the truth. Demons and devils are attracted to such people for two reasons: their Light, which the dark ones would love to have for themselves, but can’t because they defy God, and their soul because they know that as more people turn to the Light, the sooner will come their inevitable end, that is, the end of their evil activities, not their death. So these dark ones will do just about anything to stop you from becoming totally enlightened, while at the same time trying to suck off your Light like a kind of vampire.

Naturally, these demons will attack us using our weaknesses against us, whatever they may be. In many, one weakness might be vanity. We don’t just want enlightenment to serve God, we want it to be better than others. We want our grass to be greener, our back accounts to be bigger, or, in the case of spiritual people, our souls to be more enlightened than others. As the writer of this section of the Philokalia states (the book has many authors), we need to develop humility. We need to realize that we are not more important than others and we cannot move far along the path of spiritual development without reaching back to aid those behind us, just as those beings well ahead of us are reaching back to help us. We need to get rid of the ridiculous fantasy of the “self-made man”., there is no such thing. We all rely on others in various ways in the material world and the same is true on the spiritual path. We rely not only on those holy men and women who have walked the path before us, but also on the angels and Beings of Light who also try to help us climb through the lower levels of existence and climb to the higher levels where they dwell: the paradise that Adam & Eve were kicked out of in the allegorical story on the fall of humanity.

When I read the part about the second type of demon or temptation, I thought of the popular country song of a few decades ago with the line “I never dreamed he’d have blue eyes and blue jeans.” that is referring to the devil tempting a young woman. By appearing to her as a handsome young man with blue eyes and tight blue jeans, she finds him very difficult to resist. Of course, she is just an average person, not someone trying to achieve spiritual enlightenment, but something very similar can happen to such persons. Simply because you have become spiritual doesn’t mean your sex drive shrivels up or goes dormant. On the contrary, the process of taking in spiritual Light from the spiritual sun also allows more material light into you and all this light is giving you increased energy. This increased energy can be turned by demonic suggestions into a pursuit of sex. We need to develop the will power, the self-control to not fall into that trap. Sex is not evil and even spiritual people can have sex, but having sex too often can deplete your energy, lower your frequencies, and prevent spiritual progress. So we need to be reasonable with having sex and not give into it too often. How much is too often? That depends on the individual, but if you find yourself too tired to perform spiritual techniques, it may be that you are using too much energy on sex.

It should also be noted that sex and vanity are not the only ways demons can temp the spiritual person and lead them astray, but they are two of the major one. They can also make you, or a loved one, physically ill, or cause you to have an injury that will prevent you from doing your spiritual growth techniques. We must always be alert to attempts by dark ones to lead us away from the Path. And also protect ourselves with crystals and by joining a spiritual community so we can work with others.
