Spiritual Symbols: Brothers

Stories of two brothers, sometimes twins,  who oppose each other abound in myth and legends including religious ones.  Cain and Able in the Bible, Romulus and Remus who founded Rome according to legend, Osiris and Set from Egyptian mythology, Ormuzd and Ahriman in Zoroastrianism, Vritra and Indra from the Vedic tradition, and others.   The Caddo tribe of Native americans have their legend of Village Boy and Wild Boy who become thunder and lightning.   The Xingu people of Brazil have the legend of twin brothers Kuat and Iae, who forced the vulture king Urubutsin to give light to the dark world.
All of these pairs of brothers represent the opposing powers of Light and dark,  spirit and matter.  They also symbolize the many opposites that exist in the world od duality:  male and female, hot and cold, positive and negative, yin and yang, good and evil.
Greek mythology has a slight variation of the brothers mythology:  Apollo and his sister Artemis are twins.  He is the god of music, light, and medicine and is responsible for carrying the sun through the sky in his chariot.  Artemis is the goddess of hunting and wild things.  She is associated with the moon.  Clearly, this pair also represents the dual forces.

Random Thoughts 4-25-2010

I’ve hinted at, though I’ve never really explained that I am only a part-time minister (we use the term “lay minister” in the International Community of Christ) and I have a full-time secular job.  Now, the project I have been on for almost nine years is ending, and I am looking for a new job.   Last week I attended a kind of job fair and had my first job interviews in ten years.  It’s a scary thing that I guess you never get used to unless your one of those people who changes jobs every year or two.

I understand some airlines are angry that so many flights were canceled in Europe because of the volcano in Iceland and some experts are now saying it may not have been necessary, at lest not for that long a time.  Personally, if I had been flying to or from Europe, I would rather they error on the side of caution and delay flights an extra day than take a chance and find out they were wrong.  One thing I have wondered though is if any attempt was made to send people by train to countries where planes were still flying.  I know Europe has excellent train service and you can travel almost anywhere in Europe in a day or two by train.

Actually, we have no problems – we have opportunities for which we should give thanks…  An error we refuse to correct has many lives.  It takes courage to face one’s own shortcomings, and wisdom to do something about them.” ~Edgar Cayce

Scripture: The Bhagavad Gita 8:9

The Lord is the supreme poet, the first cause, the sovereign ruler, subtler than the tiniest particle, the support of all, inconceivable, bright as the sun, beyond darkness.

God is “subtler than the tiniest particle because He is not physical at all.  He is pure spirit, so He occupies no space while at the same time being everywhere.

Note: In most cases, when I quote from the Bhagavad Gita, I am using the Eknath Easwaran translation.

Using Willpower

For those trying to develop their spiritual side, will power can be both a blessing and a curse.  Willpower can help you stick with a schedule of practicing your spiritual development techniques, reading the books, listening to spiritual music, etc.  On the other hand, a strong will usually results in a strong ego that wants to maintain control of you at all times, and that prevents spiritual communication.  It can get tricky.
So use a little will power to help you stick with schedules and do what you need to get done, but don’t get carried away trying to build up a super will as some business gurus, for example, teach by having you do exercises like trying to hold your breath for a long time, like learning to tolerate pain, like walking on hot coals without getting burned, etc.  This type of development of super willpower only develops a super ego that will never allow your spiritual side to develop to any significant degree.
