Rules and Laws in a Spiritual School

  1. Love God above all. To ‘love God’ means to love wisdom and truth. We can love God in no other way than in being obedient to Divine law. …
  2. Devote your time to your spiritual advancement.… The spirit of man may send his mental rays into matter to to obtain knowledge of all terrestrial things; but there is no need that the spirit should thereby lose its own divine self-consciousness …
  3. Be entirely unselfish. Spiritual knowledge begins only where all sense of self ceases. Where the delusion which causes man to imagine himself to be a being separated and isolated from others. …
  4. Be temperate, modest, energetic, and silent. The door to the inner temple is called ‘Contentment.’ … without energy, nothing can be accomplished. …
  5. Learn to know the origin of the METALS contained within thyself. Ignorance is the cause of suffering.
  6. Beware of Quacks and pretenders. He who claims to be in possession of knowledge, knows nothing. …
  7. Live in constant adoration of the highest good.… The Eagle spreads his wings and rises up towards the sun.
  8. Learn the theory before you attempt to practice. He who travels with a trustworthy guide will be safer. …
  9. Exercise charity towards all beings. All beings are one in the spirit; divided from each other merely by the illusion of form …
  10. Read the ancient books of wisdom. Books are to the unripe mind that which mother’s milk is to the nursling.
  11. Try to understand their secret meaning. That which is external may be seen with the external eye but that which is spiritual can only be seen with the eye of the spirit.

These are the eleven rules which ought to be followed. … But the Rosicrucians have a twelfth rule, an Arcanum, in which great power resides, but of which it is not lawful to speak.” ~Franz Hartmann

Rules of Mystical Orders

While Mr. Hartmann calls these rules the Rosicrucian Rules, They apply to almost nay of the ancient mystical orders with only slight changes and additions. Since mystery schools were all about spiritual development, it behooves all of us trying to develop our spiritual self to pay attention to what they had to say.

There are many New Age people today who say there are no rules to spiritual development. Others say there is only one rule, which is to be opposed to organized religion. Both groups are wrong. Not all religions or churches are the same and none of those critics have ever taken the time to really research them. They simply make assumptions base on knowledge of a few. And the no-rules type usually get into deep trouble after a few years when the demons and dark beings control them even more that the church sheep they like to insult. There are rules of all orders on earth. There are rules, or laws, in Heaven as well. Anarchy and chaos is not being spiritual. So let’s take a closer look at some of the rules Hartmann mentions.

Love God Above All

It should be obvious and logical o all serious students that this is rule number one. If you don’t love God, you are not going to follow His Laws. You also won’t work for completion of the Divine Plan if you don’t love God. No one will follow the remaining rules otherwise.

Time For Spiritual Advancement

Another fairy tale of many who call themselves spiritual is that nothing has to be done to become spiritual. They simply declare that they are spiritual, and so it is. No great spiritual school ever taught such nonsense.

We must work on our spiritual development forever. The job is never completed. We never reach the highest level of consciousness while trapped in a physical body. Yet we must go as far as we can before we leave that body. And we must work on it regularly. That means daily, or close to it. Whatever spiritual development techniques you practice, they must be done often to be most effective.

Be Unselfish

Selfish people hoard things. We all know about the very wealthy who hoard money and material goods. Most spiritual people know this is not a good thing. Yet there are also those who hoard knowledge, even spiritual people. Sure, there is advanced spiritual knowledge that can never be shared with the general public. Nonetheless, there is basic information that should be shared. Not only will you be helping others, but when we work together, we accomplish more that when we work alone. Most businesses know this is true. They call it “The Law of Synergy”.

Another reason to not be selfish is that we never know everything. Others may know something we don’t. If we want them to share, we have to share.

Beware of Quacks

Sadly, there are many phony spiritual teachers around these days. Some of them are innocent of deception. They actually believe that the overly-simplified systems they promote are really going to cause a spiritual awakening. Of course, they never have any proof. There are others who are well aware that they have put together a mix of available spiritual teachings from various schools and places simply to appeal to the masses and make a good deal of money. While the bits of spiritual truth their books and seminars share may be better than noting, we should take care to not believe that they have it all. No book aver contains all that is necessary for a complete spiritual awakening. In a real spiritual school, certain truths are reserved for those who have reached a certain level of understanding.

Learn the Theory Before You Practice

Hopefully, no one would attempt to do brain surgery before attending medical school. And the courts won’t let you be represented by a “lawyer” who doesn’t actually have a law degree. Yet there are many who think they can just jump into spiritual practices without first studying the proper way of using them.

St. Paul was one such person. He knew that Jesus and His followers practiced some form of sun gazing, but he didn’t know the details. He tried doing it anyway and seriously injured his eyes. So learn the whys and hows before you do it.

Charity Towards all Beings

This is another important rule of all real spiritual schools. Vegans will, of course, jump on this and say, “See, we told you it was wrong to kill and eat animals.” They are correct. Yet, they are also wrong. They think animals are beings, but plants are not. But plants are just as much living beings a as animals are. St. Francis understood this when he call all plants and animals his brothers and sisters.

So we must treat all lifeforms with charity and respect. And eat only what we need to survive. We need to start learning to eat light. The Divine Light of God is the only food we should be eating. Unfortunately, we have become so dense, we cannot live on light alone. But if we take in spiritual light from the spiritual sun regularly, we start changes that will be passed on tho the next generation. In two or three generations, we may be living solely on light. Until then, killing and eating one type of being is the same as any other. On a spiritual level, they are all the same.

Read and Understand Ancient Books

Many of us have read ancient books of wisdom such as the Bhagavad Gita, the Bible, The Upanishads, etc. Few really understand them. And many have never read them. We read the books of contemporary spiritual writers, but ignore the great writings of the past that hold far more truth than the McDonald’s of spirituality.

But to understand them, we need to first accept that a large part of all of them is written in allegory. They are not intended to be taken literally.

A good example of this is the Bible story of Jesus turning water to wine at a wedding. Materialistic types take this literally and think it was a great accomplishment. But even if it really happened, it’s importance lies more in it’s allegorical meaning. The basic meaning of is that Jesus turned materialistic people (water) into spiritually awakened people (wine). That is far more important.

Rules and Laws

While the rules of spiritual or mystery schools were important to maintain order and aid spiritual growth, they never overruled the Law of God. All these schools recognized that God’s Law was supreme. But they also recognized that many beginning students didn’t know what those laws were. For that reason, they had laws and rules on the human level. Unlike modern laws, however, they never violated the supreme Law of God.

Eleusinian School Initiations and Mysteries

“In The Obelisk in Freemasonry, John A. Weisse describes the officiating personages of the Eleusinian Mysteries as consisting of a male and a female hierophant who directed the initiations; a male and a female torchbearer; a male herald; and a male and a female altar attendant. He states that, according to Porphyry, the hierophant represents Plato’s Demiurgus or Creator of the World; the torch bearer, the Sun; the altar man, the moon; the herald, Hermes or Mercury, and the other officials, minor stars.

“From the records available, a number of strange and apparently supernatural phenomena accompanied the rituals. Many initiates claim to have actually seen the living gods themselves. Whether this was the result of religious ecstasy or the actual cooperation of invisible powers with the visible priests must remain a mystery. …

“Women and children were admitted to the Eleusinian Mysteries, and at one time there were literally thousands of initiates. Because this vast host was not prepared for the highest spiritual and mystical doctrines, a division necessarily took place within the society itself. The higher teachings were given to only a limited number of initiates.” ~Manly P. Hall

Mystery Schools

The Eleusinian school of Greece was probably typical of the ancient mystery schools. While details differed, the main teachings of most of them was identical. Certain other facts were also common. First, initiates who were accepted into the school took an oath of secrecy. The teaching were not to bee shared with the general public. Second, the initiate was accepted on a trial basis, and probably had to be recommended by someone who was already in the school. Third, in most schools, the initiate had to turn over all his material wealth to the treasurer of the school. If he failed the trial period and was asked to leave, hi money was returned to him. If he stayed with the school, his money was used, along with all the other students, for the benefit of the entire school.

Male and Female

In the available histories of mystery schools, you don’t find many mentions of women. Usually these schools were exclusively for men. At least that is what we were led to believe. In actual fact, however, many such schools did have both men and women in them. We see in the above quote that the Eleusinian school not only allowed women, but that in their initiations and other ceremonies, women played an important part. Most mystic schools recognized that women and men are different, but that doesn’t make one sex better than the other. Both sexes have their strengths and weaknesses, and the best schools accounted for those differences, while still treating all as equals.

Some histories of the Essenes, one of the best known of the spiritual groups and schools, indicate that only men were allowed within their communities. But what some Essene groups actually did is separate men and women into separate camps. They accepted both, but in different places. Other Essene groups, however, had men and women together. The Essenes were also known to adopt unwanted children in whom they saw spiritual potential, and raise them within their communities. Continue reading “Eleusinian School Initiations and Mysteries”

Greater Mysteries and Lesser Mysteries of Spiritual Schools

“Just as the Lesser Mysteries discusses the prenatal epoch of man when the consciousness in its nine days was descended into the realm of illusion and assuming the veil of unreality, so the Greater Mysteries discussed the principles of spiritual regeneration and revealed to initiates not only the simplest but also the most direct and complete method of liberating their higher natures from the bondage of material ignorance. Like Prometheus chained to the top of Mount Caucasus, man’s higher nature is chained to his inadequate personality. The nine days of initiation were also symbolic of the nine spheres through which the human soul descends during the process of assuming a terrestrial form.” ~Manly P. Hall

Lesser and Greater Mysteries

There is something about spiritual development teachings that is not well-known. And many who have heard of this, simply don’t accept it, which is unfortunate. It is that there are essentially two levels of spiritual teachings. Hall calls them the lesser and greater teachings. They could also be called beginner teachings and advanced teachings. The difference between the two is not like going from first grade to second grade. It is more like going from a basic first-aid class to learning to be a medical doctor.

Those mysteries in the lesser category are often revealed to the public. Most of the greater mysteries are secret. Students are required to take a vow of secrecy before any of those mysteries can be revealed to them. In some ancient mystery schools, students would be severely punished for revealing them. At the very least, they are kicked out of the school. Unfortunately, many modern spiritual schools are run by people who themselves were never exposed to the greater mysteries. There schools can only teach the lesser mysteries as that is all they know. Naturally, they don’t tell their students that. That tell the students they are teaching all the mysteries.

Spiritual Regeneration

Hall says the greater mysteries dealt with principles of spiritual regeneration. What could he mean by that? Don’t we have a spirit and soul already? Yes, we do. But we come into the material world with those spiritual faculties in a dormant state. They can’t really be of any benefit to us as long as they remain dormant. So the purpose of the greater mysteries is to first, awaken those faculties, make them conscious. This is something far more than the simple recognition that the realm of matter is illusion and the realm of spirit is reality. That is a first step, but true awakening is more.

And the job is not done with awakening. That is like thinking that a newborn baby is fully developed. The newly awakened spirit and soul must be developed. Not in the same way that the body and mind are developed, but something similar with a more spiritual twist. Their frequencies need to be gradually increased and their level of consciousness increased. This is done primarily by taking in energy from the spiritual sun. The details of how to do that remain secret unless you are a student of the greater mysteries in a school that actually teaches them.

The Prometheus Allegory

There is more to the legend of Prometheus than most of us know. The part we do know is that Zeus punished him by having him chained to the side of a mountain where an eagle would attack him and eat his liver every day. At night, it would grow back. The next day, the same thing would happen.

While this gory tale sounds sick, it s allegorical, not literal. Prometheus was a champion of man among the Greek gods. As such, he represents man in this tale. Being chained to a mountain or a rock symbolized man’s being mentally “chained” to matter. Because most of us stay trapped in matter, and do little to go beyond it, we lose our spiritual strength every day symbolized by Prometheus having his liver eater. Having it grow back indicates that even though we are trapped in the realm of matter, we can awaken our spiritual faculties and escape. So make the effort to learn those Greater Mysteries.

The Great University of the Coming Golden Age

“The great university will be divided into grades, admission to which will be through preliminary tests or initiations. Here mankind will be instructed in the most sacred, the most secret, and the most enduring of all Mysteries—Symbolism. The initiate will be taught that every visible object, every abstract thought, every emotional reaction is but the symbol of an eternal principle. Here mankind will learn that Chiram (Truth) lies buried in every atom of Cosmos; that every form is a symbol and every symbol the tomb of an eternal verity. Through education—spiritual, mental, moral, and physical—man will learn to release living truths from their lifeless coverings.

“The perfect government of the earth must be patterned after the divine government by which the universe is ordered. In that day when perfect order is reestablished, … men will no longer seek for happiness, for they shall find it welling up within themselves. … Then shall sages sit upon the seats of the mighty and the gods walk with men.” ~Manly P Hall

The Great University

This university will have a spiritual orientation rather than a material one. It will be a university that meets the original definition of that word, which is a school that teaches universal truth. It will be controlled by spiritual masters rather than politicians and corporate leaders. They will not have the task of turning people into compliant workers, but of helping them awaken their creative spiritual powers. It will help lead them on the path, but it will not walk it for them. Each of us must eventually walk the True Path himself. The True Path, not one we make up ourselves in our own limited mind.

Hidden Truth

Truth does lie hidden in every atom, in every beam of light. Truth is often right in front of us. But symbols hide its true meaning. The allegory in the Bible,

gold sun

Monstrance By LaRedCultural – Own work

the Upanishads, and other sacred writings. The symbolism in objects, such as the monstrance found in many Christian churches. They use it but don’t realize that it is a symbol of the spiritual sun.

Foolish people laugh at the incredible tales found in the Bible, thinking they are meant to be taken literally. They don’t understand that it doesn’t matter one way or the others if these tales are literally true or not. The symbolism hidden within those tales is what matters. Much like the symbolism hid within all great myths such as the myth of the Hero, which I covered in a recent post.

Most of all, though, virtually everything in the realm of matter is a symbol. That is because matter is temporary, not real. Therefore, it must symbolize something real that is generating it, or that it was generated from. It is our job to learn to see beyond the symbols to the reality they represent. The great university will help us understand those symbols and allegories. Continue reading “The Great University of the Coming Golden Age”
