Rules and Laws in a Spiritual School

  1. Love God above all. To ‘love God’ means to love wisdom and truth. We can love God in no other way than in being obedient to Divine law. …
  2. Devote your time to your spiritual advancement.… The spirit of man may send his mental rays into matter to to obtain knowledge of all terrestrial things; but there is no need that the spirit should thereby lose its own divine self-consciousness …
  3. Be entirely unselfish. Spiritual knowledge begins only where all sense of self ceases. Where the delusion which causes man to imagine himself to be a being separated and isolated from others. …
  4. Be temperate, modest, energetic, and silent. The door to the inner temple is called ‘Contentment.’ … without energy, nothing can be accomplished. …
  5. Learn to know the origin of the METALS contained within thyself. Ignorance is the cause of suffering.
  6. Beware of Quacks and pretenders. He who claims to be in possession of knowledge, knows nothing. …
  7. Live in constant adoration of the highest good.… The Eagle spreads his wings and rises up towards the sun.
  8. Learn the theory before you attempt to practice. He who travels with a trustworthy guide will be safer. …
  9. Exercise charity towards all beings. All beings are one in the spirit; divided from each other merely by the illusion of form …
  10. Read the ancient books of wisdom. Books are to the unripe mind that which mother’s milk is to the nursling.
  11. Try to understand their secret meaning. That which is external may be seen with the external eye but that which is spiritual can only be seen with the eye of the spirit.

These are the eleven rules which ought to be followed. … But the Rosicrucians have a twelfth rule, an Arcanum, in which great power resides, but of which it is not lawful to speak.” ~Franz Hartmann

Rules of Mystical Orders

While Mr. Hartmann calls these rules the Rosicrucian Rules, They apply to almost nay of the ancient mystical orders with only slight changes and additions. Since mystery schools were all about spiritual development, it behooves all of us trying to develop our spiritual self to pay attention to what they had to say.

There are many New Age people today who say there are no rules to spiritual development. Others say there is only one rule, which is to be opposed to organized religion. Both groups are wrong. Not all religions or churches are the same and none of those critics have ever taken the time to really research them. They simply make assumptions base on knowledge of a few. And the no-rules type usually get into deep trouble after a few years when the demons and dark beings control them even more that the church sheep they like to insult. There are rules of all orders on earth. There are rules, or laws, in Heaven as well. Anarchy and chaos is not being spiritual. So let’s take a closer look at some of the rules Hartmann mentions.

Love God Above All

It should be obvious and logical o all serious students that this is rule number one. If you don’t love God, you are not going to follow His Laws. You also won’t work for completion of the Divine Plan if you don’t love God. No one will follow the remaining rules otherwise.

Time For Spiritual Advancement

Another fairy tale of many who call themselves spiritual is that nothing has to be done to become spiritual. They simply declare that they are spiritual, and so it is. No great spiritual school ever taught such nonsense.

We must work on our spiritual development forever. The job is never completed. We never reach the highest level of consciousness while trapped in a physical body. Yet we must go as far as we can before we leave that body. And we must work on it regularly. That means daily, or close to it. Whatever spiritual development techniques you practice, they must be done often to be most effective.

Be Unselfish

Selfish people hoard things. We all know about the very wealthy who hoard money and material goods. Most spiritual people know this is not a good thing. Yet there are also those who hoard knowledge, even spiritual people. Sure, there is advanced spiritual knowledge that can never be shared with the general public. Nonetheless, there is basic information that should be shared. Not only will you be helping others, but when we work together, we accomplish more that when we work alone. Most businesses know this is true. They call it “The Law of Synergy”.

Another reason to not be selfish is that we never know everything. Others may know something we don’t. If we want them to share, we have to share.

Beware of Quacks

Sadly, there are many phony spiritual teachers around these days. Some of them are innocent of deception. They actually believe that the overly-simplified systems they promote are really going to cause a spiritual awakening. Of course, they never have any proof. There are others who are well aware that they have put together a mix of available spiritual teachings from various schools and places simply to appeal to the masses and make a good deal of money. While the bits of spiritual truth their books and seminars share may be better than noting, we should take care to not believe that they have it all. No book aver contains all that is necessary for a complete spiritual awakening. In a real spiritual school, certain truths are reserved for those who have reached a certain level of understanding.

Learn the Theory Before You Practice

Hopefully, no one would attempt to do brain surgery before attending medical school. And the courts won’t let you be represented by a “lawyer” who doesn’t actually have a law degree. Yet there are many who think they can just jump into spiritual practices without first studying the proper way of using them.

St. Paul was one such person. He knew that Jesus and His followers practiced some form of sun gazing, but he didn’t know the details. He tried doing it anyway and seriously injured his eyes. So learn the whys and hows before you do it.

Charity Towards all Beings

This is another important rule of all real spiritual schools. Vegans will, of course, jump on this and say, “See, we told you it was wrong to kill and eat animals.” They are correct. Yet, they are also wrong. They think animals are beings, but plants are not. But plants are just as much living beings a as animals are. St. Francis understood this when he call all plants and animals his brothers and sisters.

So we must treat all lifeforms with charity and respect. And eat only what we need to survive. We need to start learning to eat light. The Divine Light of God is the only food we should be eating. Unfortunately, we have become so dense, we cannot live on light alone. But if we take in spiritual light from the spiritual sun regularly, we start changes that will be passed on tho the next generation. In two or three generations, we may be living solely on light. Until then, killing and eating one type of being is the same as any other. On a spiritual level, they are all the same.

Read and Understand Ancient Books

Many of us have read ancient books of wisdom such as the Bhagavad Gita, the Bible, The Upanishads, etc. Few really understand them. And many have never read them. We read the books of contemporary spiritual writers, but ignore the great writings of the past that hold far more truth than the McDonald’s of spirituality.

But to understand them, we need to first accept that a large part of all of them is written in allegory. They are not intended to be taken literally.

A good example of this is the Bible story of Jesus turning water to wine at a wedding. Materialistic types take this literally and think it was a great accomplishment. But even if it really happened, it’s importance lies more in it’s allegorical meaning. The basic meaning of is that Jesus turned materialistic people (water) into spiritually awakened people (wine). That is far more important.

Rules and Laws

While the rules of spiritual or mystery schools were important to maintain order and aid spiritual growth, they never overruled the Law of God. All these schools recognized that God’s Law was supreme. But they also recognized that many beginning students didn’t know what those laws were. For that reason, they had laws and rules on the human level. Unlike modern laws, however, they never violated the supreme Law of God.

thought-substance

Thought-Substance is Powerful Energy

“When interest, sympathy, and good will meet to present pleasantly their opinions or thoughts on any special subject to each other, for an hour, there goes from that company a wave of thought-substance, which strikes other minds, and awakens or renews interest in that especial business, art, or cause, in proportion to the sensitiveness or capacity of such minds to receive thoughts. The new thought coming suddenly to you, comes because somewhere it is being talked out or agitated.

“The wave so caused acts n unseen elements precisely like that made by throwing a stone in calm water. The waves so radiate from the talk center; and they will continue to spread out in every direction. …

‘The same idea, or parts or shades of that idea, may float into a thousand minds within an hour, when once started, through a few people taking it. … Through thought-substance so sent far and wide you awaken desire or interest for the thing talked of.” ~Prentice Mulford

Wave of Thought-Substance

Mulford uses the term “thought-substance” to make it clear that thought is a substance. More accurately, it is an energy and energy does work. That is a basic law of science we all learned in grade school. Thought-substance or thought energy does work just as any other energy does. The main difference is that with most other kinds of energy, we are intentionally using that energy to do a specific task. We intentionally hit the nail with a hammer. The hammer doesn’t just jump up on its own and start hitting the nail. But with thought, most of us are unaware of the work being done by that energy.

A curious argument on the power of thought-substance exists today. While many insist that watching violent movies and television, or playing violent video games, leads to increased violence in our world, the makers of those products deny it. Yet, at the same time, meditation groups sponsor events where thousands of people meditate for peace together and the result is that crime and violence in the area drops dramatically. Unfortunately, that drop is temporary. Yet, it does demonstrate that thought energy does do work. And further, it shows that that energy can be directed to do a specific task. confidence

Confidence In Our Abilities, Physical and Spiritual, Helps Us Succeed

“He puts no confidence, however, in his labors, and manner of life, until he obtains the things hoped for. Until the Lord comes and dwells in him in the full experience and energy of the Spirit. And when he tastes the goodness of the Lord, and delights in the fruits of the Spirit, and the veil of darkness is taken away, and the light of Christ shines upon him and works in him in joy unspeakable, then is he fully satisfied. …

“But he still has conflict and fear from the robber spirits of wickedness, lest he should grow selfish1 and lose his labor, before he is accepted in the kingdom of heaven, in the Jerusalem which is above.

“Let us then beseech God that He would put off from us the old man, and put on us the heavenly Christ, here and now, so that being in gladness, and thus being led by Him, we shall be in great tranquility.” ~St. Macarius the Egyptian

Lack of Confidence

A lack of confidence in ourselves and our abilities is common. We try something, but are not sure we will succeed. As a result, we fail more often than we should. Having confidence in ourselves makes us try harder. It also helps us make better decisions. When we have confidence, the things we need to succeed are drawn to us. When we lack confidence, we push them away. So confidence is key to success.

Spiritual Confidence

St. Macarius says we will have confidence in our spiritual abilities when the Lord comes and dwells in us. But in actuality, that is a catch-22 situation. The Christ Power, or Christ Consciousness isn’t going to enter us until we have fully prepared for it. In order to prepare properly, we have to have a certain degree of confidence already. It is true that if we achieve Christ Consciousness, we will have unstoppable confidence. But that doesn’t happen overnight. It doesn’t even happen with a few months of practicing spiritual growth techniques. So it behooves us to work on developing confidence on our own rather than waiting until we achieve Christ Consciousness.

Joy Unspeakable

Even before truly achieving Christ Consciousness, we do have the light of Christ shining on us. This spiritual light, that comes to us through the spiritual sun, does help enlighten us and give us more confidence. This encourages us to continue on the path to complete enlightenment and the highest levels of consciousness.

Robber Spirits

Yes, there are robber spirits that can fill us with fear and doubts. You can call them devils, demons, or forces of darkness. The name doesn’t matter. What matters is they can affect us. We must be strong and alert so we can recognize when these dark one are trying to manipulate us. They can also work on us indirectly through other people who they have in complete control.

Jerusalem Above

An important point here that might be missed. St. Macarius is telling us that there is a Jerusalem other than the city on Earth. There is a higher Jerusalem a spiritual Jerusalem. And when you read things that prophets and others have said about Jerusalem, you need to know which one they are referring to. So when Jeremiah says, “At that time Jerusalem shall be called the throne of the Lord, and all nations shall gather to it, to the presence of the Lord in Jerusalem, and they shall no more stubbornly follow their own evil heart.” or John in Revelation writes, “And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.” they are not talking about a city, but a spiritual place.

Put Off the Old Man

When St. Macarius advises us that God will “ put off from us the old man,” it isn’t talking about the elderly. By old man (or woman) he means the former man, the person you were before a spiritual awakening. So he is correct in saying that God wants us to put off that self and take on a new self, a Christ self. That is the purpose of all real spiritual training. But first, we must develop the confidence that we can do it.

  1. I am assuming this word should be “selfish”. What is actually in the book is “slftck”.

ascending soul

Ascending Soul in the Vision of Mary

“Desire said, ‘I did not see you descending, but now I see you ascending. Why are you lying, since you belong to me?’

“The soul answered and said, ‘I saw you, but you did not see me or know me. You perceived the garment I was wearing, but you did not recognize me.’ After the soul said this, she left, rejoicing greatly. The soul approached the third power, called ignorance.

“The power questioned the soul, saying, ‘Where are you going? You are bound by wickedness, you are bound, so do not pass judgment.’

“The soul said, ‘Why do you pass judgment on me, though I have not passed judgment? I was bound, but I have not bound. I was not recognized, but I have recognized that all is to be dissolved, both what is earthly and what is heavenly.’

“When the soul overcame the third power, she ascended and saw the fourth power. It took seven forms: The first form is darkness, the second, desire, the third, ignorance, the fourth, death wish, the fifth, fleshly kingdom, the sixth, foolish fleshly wisdom, the seventh, angry person’s wisdom. These are the seven powers of wrath.

“The powers asked the soul, ‘Where are you coming from, slayer of humans, and where are you going, conqueror of space?’

“The soul answered and said, ‘What binds me is slain, what surrounds me is destroyed, my desire is gone, ignorance is dead. In a world I was freed through another world, and in an image I was freed through a heavenly image. This is the fetter of forgetfulness that exists in the world of time. From now on I shall rest, through time, age, and aeon, in silence.’” ~Gospel of Mary

Ascending Soul

Desire, which in the quote is the name of some dark entity or demon, says it did not see the soul descending, but now it sees it ascending. It then accuses the soul of lying because, it claims, the soul belongs to the dark ones.

Desire did not see the soul descending, yet it knows that it happened. So like most things said by dark beings, this is a kind of lie. It may not have witnessed the soul’s descent, but it knows that it happened. Otherwise, the soul would not be in the fallen realm of matter.

But desire does see the ascending soul and makes note of it. Why? Because as far as the dark ones are concerned, it is seeing a prisoner attempting to escape. And they don’t like us to escape. They like to keep us trapped here because they survive by sucking energy out of us.

Garment of the Soul

The soul replies to Desire that it didn’t see him, because it could only see the garment it was wearing and didn’t recognize the soul for what it was. The “garment” is the physical body.

It is hard to believe that a demonic being would not recognize a soul when it is inside a physical body. Yet this statement gives us two important pieces of information. First, we know the the soul is not a part of the physical body. Nor is it a creation of the body. And it certainly isn’t the brain-mind which is attached to the body. Second, it tells us that the soul is independent from the body. The soul exists quite nicely without a physical body. It is not dependent on the physical body.
