Sickness: Physical and Spiritual, Positive and Negative

“People have in the past lost their physical bodies because, being in ignorance of the fact that sickness is a process for the spirit to throw off the old material thought and take on new, they have used their forces in the wrong way to retain such thought. They retain it by their belief. Your belief will make your sickness a benefit or an evil to you. If you can but entertain the belief that it is a spiritual process for getting rid of old worn‐out elements, you assist greatly the mind in the performance of this process.

“If, however, you believe that sickness is entirely a physical condition, and that no benefit and only evil comes of it, you are using force only to load down the spirit with more and more error of which your flesh and blood will be in quality an expression, until at last your spirit rejects the body it has been trying to carry, and drops its burden. It rejects at last the whole body through the same laws by which it rejects a part of it when that part is spiritually dead. If you receive with scorn the thought that your physical body through fresher and fresher renewal of Its substance can be made perpetual, you close to yourself an entrance for life, and open another to decay and death.” ~Prentice Mulford

Process of Sickness

Actually, I think Mr. Mulford is oversimplifying sickness. There are different kinds of sickness that happen for different reasons.

There is a type of “illness” that is really just the body growing and changing. This is a perfectly natural and normal process. We need not fear it or fight. While this happens mostly in growing children, it can also happen in adults. It can happen when a person makes significant changes in lifestyle. For example, a person who has eaten a low-fiber diet for years, then switches to a high-fiber one may get diarrhea for a while. He hasn’t become ill, this is just a cleaning process.

Other sickness is “caused” by bacteria, viruses, or poisonous substances in our food. Re are the type of illnesses that should be fought off or prevented. Foolish people try to prevent them by spraying disinfecting chemicals everywhere. They don’t stop to ask the question, “If this stuff can kill bacteria and viruses, what is is doing to me?”. The answer to that question is that it is harming you also.

The real answer to preventing this type of illness is to strengthen our own immune system. We do that with exercise, healthy eating, and positive thinking.

The third major type of sickness is that which is sent to you by demons or dark beings. They want to stop you from something you are trying to do, so they make you ill. Or they may just be feeding on your energy like a vampire with little concern for how it harms you. There are ways to help protect yourself from such attacks that I’m not going to get into in this post.

Spiritual Growth Sickness

Beyond the sickness caused by dark beings and forces that wish to prevent our spiritual growth, there is another form of spiritual growth illness. This is a more positive thing and is much like that growth sickness Mr. Mulford is talking about in the quote.

When we start spiritual development exercises and awaken our spirit and soul, changes in our energy flow happen. This is not just on the spiritual level, but sinks down to the mental and physical levels as well. This can result in physical changes to our bodies, positive changes. A type of sickness resembling a cold or the flu can often happen while these changes are taking place. These bouts of spiritual growth illness are short lived—usually just a few days—and need not be fought. We should, in fact, celebrate them because it provides proof that our spiritual growth techniques are working. So keep growing and may your sicknesses always be of the beneficial kind.
