“Far sighted were the initiates of antiquity. They realized that nations come and go, that empires rise and fall, and that golden ages of art, science, and idealism are succeeded by the dark ages of superstition.
“With the needs of posterity foremost in mind, the sages of old went to inconceivable extremes to make certain that their knowledge should be preserved. They engraved it upon the face of mountains and concealed it within the measurements of colossal images, each of which was a geometric marvel. Their knowledge of chemistry and mathematics they hid within mythologies. … They wrote in characters that neither the vandalism of men not the ruthlessness of the elements could completely efface.” ~Manly P. Hall
Ever Changing World
In the constantly changing world of matter, the ancient wise men understood that things happen in cycles. Periods of wisdom followed by periods of stupidity. Periods of rising up followed by periods descent into materialism and the great lie. In addition, they knew that it is the nature of governments, once formed, to act like a living creature concerned with protecting its own existence above everything else. Such governments will oppose anything which they consider to be a threat to their authority. That usually means that they see spiritual schools and spiritual movements as threatening to them.
Actually, the spiritual schools were not trying to destroy anything except ignorance. In fact, the spiritual schools saw the need for governments to keep those who remain unenlightened under some limited control. Many ignore a spiritual leader telling them they endanger their immortal soul by their actions. Yet they will listen to a government that threatens to jail them or put them to death for it.
So the ancient wise ones hid many truths in books, myths, music and architecture. Especially myths and architecture. Materialistic governments who don’t understand the hidden meanings will tend to ignore myth and architecture as possible threats to their control of the people. On the other hand, there are those who think great mysteries are hidden in the design and architecture of every ancient building. The truth lies somewhere in the middle.
Hidden Truth in Architecture
I can’t believe that the great pyramid of Egypt was build solely as a grave for a pharaoh. In fact, I don’t believe any remains of any pharaoh has been found in any of the three great pyramids. They were actually found in the place called the Valley of the Kings. Some of the great cathedrals of Europe have tombs of great people in them. That doesn’t make that cathedral a tomb. The pyramids of Egypt were also cathedrals, or temples, of a sort. Much has been written about the proportions, mathematics, and relationships to the stars found in the architecture of the pyramids. There are many books on the subject if you wish to investigate it in detail.
While much of what has been written is complete nonsense, some truth is in it. Basically, there can be no doubt that the ancients knew a lot more about science, mathematics, and especially spiritual development than we do. And they hid at least some of that knowledge in buildings like the pyramids and the Greek temples. And don’t forget the great building projects of ancient Peru where some stones used in constructing the buildings are the size of a school bus.
Hidden Truth in Myths
Ancient mythologies are another source of hidden truth. Joseph Campbell spent a lifetime studying this and writing about it. Myths of saints or holy men defeating dragons are not about slaying animals that don’t actually exist. They are about men who defeated their own inner dragons to achieve spiritual enlightenment.
The myth of Icarus is a cautionary tale warning the spiritual student to not try to rush things before he is ready. He has tried to advance too quickly and falls as a result.
The hidden truth in the legend of the Phoenix is understood by knowing that this mythical creature represents the human soul. The soul cannot die, but the physical body can and does. But spiritual rebirth is possible through a symbolic consumption in fire, that is, by the spiritual light from God that comes to us through the spiritual sun.
Hidden Truth Today
I am convinced that in our current age of a spiritual reawakening (in some), many “muses” who inspire great artists are really angelic beings who get bits of spiritual truth into songs, books, and even paintings. Songs with lyrics like, “Let the sun shine in,” and “Follow the Sun,” are examples. And Don’t forget some of the paintings of Van Gogh. The swirling patterns indicate one who saw the pulsing frequencies of things that help reveal the truth of the universe. Or as Tesla put it, “If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration”.
Even movies seem to have hidden truth in them which may be coincidental, or not. For example, the animate caveman move, The Croods. In it, the cruder and dumber type of cavemen are forced to come out of their dark cave (shades of Plato!), and head toward the sun to escape the coming destruction. Now there is a hidden truth we should all learn.
