Explore Your World

A small child lives in a fascinating world. That is because almost everything is new to the child and therefore something to be explored, something to be investigated, something to learn about. Can you remember the first time you saw a dog? How about the first time you saw a tree? Probably not unless you were several years old when it happened. But you can probably remember other firsts with considerable detail: your first day at school, your first kiss not from a parent, the first time you went to the zoo, etc. It’s interesting to see young kids from cities introduced to common farm animals at a petting zoo. They are completely fascinated by chickens, sheep and goats.
As we get older though we seem to loose this. After we have seen all of these things, and more, we get to a point where nothing really fascinates us any more. We basically think that we already know everything, or at least everything of any value to us, so we only pay superficial attention when we are told about something new or see something new. As a result, changes in the world around us often go unnoticed.
Part of what Jesus meant when he said we needed to be like little children is that we need to maintain that fascination with the world around us. We need to continue to be explorers and explore beyond what we know. Most of all, we need to stop assuming that something is not real just because we don’t know about it. Some skepticism is healthy, but investigate before you just jump to the conclusion that things are fantasies just because your teachers didn’t tell you about them.

Listening Properly

Very often, when spiritual teachers give public talks or lectures, many in the audience miss much of the lesson. That is because we don’t listen properly. It is probably part of the nature of the modern world that when we are listening to someone else speak, rather than clearing our minds and allowing what the speaker is saying to sink in, we are instead thinking of our response to what the speaker is saying as if we were participating in a debate. Even when we are sitting in the middle of an auditorium listening to a speaker on stage and we are given no opportunity to respond, we still do this. This prevents us from hearing and understanding everything the speaker says. Especially with spiritual speakers, important information is often very subtly imbedded in the speech that is not easy to notice. This is done intentionally so that those in the audience who are not spiritual, and have no intention of becoming spiritual, will miss it. But that also means that those who are not really paying attention may miss things even if they truly wish to be enlightened. For that reason, we need to all practice listening intently at every opportunity so that when we are fortunate enough to be able to listen to an inspired spiritual teacher speak, we will be ready. And it certainly wont hurt us to listen that way to other kinds of speakers as well.

Celebrity Barometers

Celebrities make good barometers of the state of our society. Decades ago, celebrities were afraid to get a divorce, have a child when not married, or have an affair. They were afraid to get caught drunk in public or to get caught using drugs. Now we have celebrities living together and having children without marrying, getting drunk and getting arrested for drunk driving, getting caught with illegal drugs, shooting people, throwing hissy fits and trashing hotel rooms like a spoiled child, and most of the time, it doesn’t hurt their careers at all. With rap singers, a little jail time actually give them “street cred” and helps their careers. What’s more, when celebrities misbehave and break the law, their punishment is likely to be much less than what the average person would get for committing the same crime.
But how is this a barometer? It’s a barometer of our society because it reflects the changes in our values. We seem to value celebrity over just about anything else. The greatest wish of young people is to be famous. They don’t much care what they are famous for, as long as they are famous. And we value celebrities so much, we are willing to forgive a lot as long as they continue to entertain us.
And why do we value entertainment so much? Because it allows us to ignore the reality of the world around us. It allows us to ignore the signs of the failure of extreme materialism as a life style even though those sings get more obvious all the time. It allows us to ignore that it is becoming obvious that we are in the end times and need to start getting our act together, and quickly. Hopefully that will change soon, and there is some indication that it is as more people are becoming interested in real spiritual development rather than just superficial church membership.

Massive Stone Structures

The ancients all over the world built incredible buildings, statues and other structures using huge rocks or blocks of rock weight five, ten, even twenty tons.  There has been a lot of speculation in recent decades over how they cut such huge rocks, how the moved them sometimes quite a few miles to the building site, how they got them into place on these huge structures and how they got them to fit together so well that they have stayed together for many centuries without any mortar.
Another interesting question that is often overlooked in all this speculation is why?  Why use such enormous stone?  Why not use much smaller stones that could be more easily cut, moved, and assembled at the building site?  So far, I have not seen any book address this question.  One possibility is that the builders felt that much smaller stones would not have keep the structure together for so long.  Another possibility though is based on something that I read in the book “Return of the Children of Light” by Judith Bluestone Polich.  She points out that descendants of the Toltec shaman feel vibration in the rocks when they visit Teotihuacan that bring back memories of ancient times and ancient ancestors.  These vibrations also help energize the chakras.  If that is true, than it is possible that the blocks of stone needed to be very large to generate the correct frequencies.  That cutting them much smaller would have changed the vibrations so they were no longer effective.
