Speading up Entropy

    Entropy, the tendency of things in nature to move from order to disorder, structured to disorganized, is a well known scientific principle.  Iron rusts.  Wood burns.  Leaves fall off the tree and decay.  Do humans have any effect on entropy?  Unfortunately, the answer is yes and , for the most part, we are increasing it.
    When we kill a young, healthy tree to make lumber, we increase entropy.  When we pave over a field to make a parking lot, we are increasing the entropy.  When we dig up metals, minerals and chemicals from the earth where, among other things, they help keep the magnetic fields of the planet in balance, we increase entropy.  And the most obvious of all, when we burn oil, gas, coal and wood we are increasing entropy.
    I don’t suggest we stop heating our homes, or move into caves, but there are some things we can do to reduce our contribution to entropy.

  • We can leave natural things alone as much as possible.  Leave some fields full of wild grasses and flowers instead of plowing it and planting gardens.
  • Use fences and repellents to keep wild animals out of you garden instead of poison.
  • Recycle more of the things we use.
  • Avoid using disposable diapers, razors, etc.
  • Sell, donate, or get rid of things you no longer need.  Storage warehouses full of excess personal belongings are becoming as common as convenience stores.
  • Grow shade trees around your house and you won’t use as much air conditioning in the summer.

     In general, we all need to think more about what we do and what we buy and the effect on ourselfs, others, and the world.

Random Thoughts 6-29-2008

The analysis of Martian soil samples have surprised scientists.  In addition to seeing what appeared to be ice, the soil is more alkaline than they expected.  It would be possible for some Earth plans to grow in this soil.

A twenty-six year old man in Florida died after drinking 23 shots of vodka in a drinking contest with a friend.  More frightening, the CNN psychologist questioned about this indicated that binge drinking and drinking contests are becoming popular among young adults.

Another study this week found that hiding from the sun is not so healthy after all.  It leads to vitamin D deficiency which can cause heart problems and obesity in addition to being needed for calcium absorption.  Some exposure to sunlight is healthy, just don’t overdue it.

Rev. Roger Weld has added some great new photographs to his flickr album.

Some people think the soul grows from the physical body.  The soul is immortal spirit.  It existed before the body and will exist long after it.  It existed before time existed and it will exist after the end of time.  Time has no meaning in the realm of spirit.

The latest word on the melting ice cap is that the northern ice cap may be completely gone by the end of this year!  What effect that will have on climates and ocean currents is open to speculation, but it probably won’t be good.

Scripture: Acts 17:24-17:28

God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;
Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;
And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;
That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:
For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

    God is not trapped in temples and churches, He is everywhere, in every house, every yard, every nation.  He doesn’t need us to give him things.  He has no use for burnt offerings, gold and silver, or even an iPhone.  Not that it’s wrong for churches to have those things, but they are for the church and it’s members, not for God.  The only sacrifice God wants from you is the sacrifice of your egotistical desires so you can serve the will of God.
    God has made all the people of the world.  More specifically, he made our spirits and souls, all of us, not just one country, one religion or one church, everyone.
    We live in Him, not the other way around.  God is not a part of us, we are a part of God.

Gems and Crystals: Smoky Quartz

Quartz is the most common crystal on earth and smoky quartz is a common type of quarts crystal.  Smoky quartz has gray, brown or black “clouds” in the crystal.  Sometimes the cloudiness is evenly distributed and sometimes it isn’t.  I have seen some smoky quartz that is solid black.  Exactly what causes the coloration is debatable, but it seems to be related to the amount and type of radiation the crystal is exposed to as it forms.  Some colors of smoky quartz have been given alternate names.  Morion is the solid black variety.  Coon tail quartz is a variety that has alternating stripes of black and gray.  Major sources of smoky quartz include Colorado and Brazil.

Folklore and healing properties:

Smoky quartz is reputed to relieve stress and reduce fear, anger and other negative emotions.  It is believed to help in reaching goals.  It aids creativity and setting priorities. It is said to improve fertility, aid in removing toxins from the body and aid the kidneys, adrenals, pancreas and sex organs.  The brown colored crystals aid the lower chakras while the black is more neutral and can aid all of the chakras.
